Berkeley Township Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony

Ceremony full of songs and a visit from Santa

Despite a cold December night, a large crowd turned out to see the annual tree lighting ceremony at Veterans Park. The ceremony, hosted by Mayor Jason J. Varano, celebrated the holiday season. This was Varano's 14th year as host for the event. The ceremony was kicked off with a solo by the Recreation Department's own Bernie Myers.

Following Myers, the chorus group from Central Regional High School took the stage, directed by Beth Moore. They sang classic Christmas songs like "Do You Hear What I Hear" and "Little Drummer Boy."

After a few songs, the Central Regional Middle School chorus group joined the high schoolers and sang "O Holy Night" and "Joy To The World."

The last group of singers consisted of kids from the Berkeley Township Recreation program. When they finished their final song, they were treated to a surprise when Santa Claus came on stage to help light the tree.

After the tree was lit, Santa took a seat in front of the stage and visited with the children as the ceremony came to a close.

"When Santa showed up, and the faces of the all the children lit up, that's really what makes this whole ceremony a success," Varano said. "This will be my final year hosting, and I want to wish all of the residents of Berkeley a very Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah."
