Barrier Island Access Delayed For One Day After NJNG Hits Snag In Pressurization Process

Leaks discovered in Seaside Heights, Pelican Island okay, Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. says

The Thomas A. Mathis Bridge over Barnegat Bay will remain closed on Friday, since New Jersey Natural Gas has more remedial work to do on the barrier island, Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. said.

"The township was informed that New Jersey Natural Gas has encountered more leaks on the barrier island that they expected in Seaside Heights," Amato said tonight.

The news sets the company's timetable for pressurizing the gas lines back one day and prohibits access to the storm-ravaged towns on the peninsula via the Route 37 East bridge on Friday.

"New Jersey Natural Gas has additional  work to do on the repressurization project...that will require access to homes to remain restricted on Friday," Amato said. "The bridge must remain closed on Friday morning. As soon as New Jersey Natural Gas notifies the township they have completed the work, access will be restored."

New Jersey Natural Gas began to pressurize the gas lines for Seaside Heights and Pelican Island on Thursday. While leaks were discovered in Seaside Heights, there were no problems on Pelican Island, the mayor said.

NJNG had originally announced plans to pressurize the lines for Seaside Park and South Seaside Park on Friday.

Once the lines are pressurized, NJNG employees will do meter rebuilds. When the meter rebuilds are completed, natural gas will be reintroduced to the meter, the mayor said.

The gas will be shut off at the meter's shut-off valve and a tag attached to the valve.

The tag will state "Before opening this valve, you must properly test and inspect the piping beyond the valve as well as any natural gas equipment.  You may also need to have approval by your local code official.  Once inspection is complete and any and all necessary approvals are obtained, natural gas service may be safely initiated by a qualified individual, such as a licensed plumber or HVAC contractor, without contacting New Jersey Natural Gas Company."

Read carefully!
Story headline says bridge and barrier island closed Friday - but the details and the NJNG website say: "The bridge must remain closed on Friday morning. As soon as New Jersey Natural Gas notifies the township they have completed the work, access will be restored. ie - may not be closed all day.

i do feel for you lou however, when your home blows up because there was a gas leak somewhere in the neighborhood, maybe even your neighbors home, ..if you survive, you'll be sueing everyone in sight because they allowed you back into an unsafe area.

I too have heard that some banks were doing that. I guess it depends on your bank. Certainly worth a phone call. So sorry for your loss.

Yes, and I am a tenant who is still required to pay rent. No damage to the home, I am staying out of state but am coming back for Christmas. I can't afford to pay rent and find another place to live. Minor problem compared to some, but still a problem and I am not entitled to any help.

Quit whining, Fran. You were always just in it for yourself. You wanted to be "CouncilwomanRead More Fran Siddons." Most people saw right through you. You biggest mistake was believing your inflated sense of self.

Why couldn't you just write a classy speech, you chose to look like a sore loser once again. YouRead More listed reasons for losing and you and I both, know you tried to talk to the board workers and the Republican Challenger had to ask you to stop. You stood right outside the doors and tried to talk to voters also, you did this at all the polling places. You had 3 challengers to 1 republican challenger at the polls, so how could all that you say get done. Why didn't they call the election board? Come on Fran, just admit the people DO REMEMBER and that is why you lost.
