A Seaside Heights man was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune after a late afternoon accident on Route 530 that shut down traffic in the area for several hours, police said.

Kermit Asay, 48, was traveling eastbound on Route 530 in his white Ford 2002 F-150 and Deborah Richards, 61, Whiting, was heading westbound when her   2004 Saturn Ion swerved into the eastbound lane and struck Asay's pickup, Sgt. Kevin Santucci said.

"From what we know now, he's in stable condition," Santucci said.

Richards was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River with neck pain.

Police are still trying to determine why Richards crossed over into the opposite lane, Santucci said.

The accident is under investigation by Patrolman John Houghkirk. Dover Road to Route 530 and out to Township Line Road near the Manchester border was closed to traffic for several hours, Santucci said.

The Manchester and Toms River police departments, along with the Ocean County Sheriff's Department, the Bayville First Aid Squad, Manitou Park Fire Company and MONOC paramedics responded, he said.
