Swimmers Rescued from Rip Currents in Seaside Park, Seaside Heights

At least five people had to be helped from the water on Saturday in Seaside Heights and Seaside Park, as strong created by the passing of tropical storms made for dangerous conditions.

Many beaches along the Jersey Shore are without lifeguards after Labor Day, and beachgoers are warned repeatedly to stay out of the water. On the boardwalk in Seaside Heights, announcements were being made to those on the beach not to swim due to the danger.

Shortly before 1 p.m. in Seaside Park, a man was pulled from the water by a surfer after he got caught in rough surf, Seaside Park police reported.

The man, whose age and name were unavailable, got caught in the rip current near the Brighton Avenue beach and the surfer rescued him before emergency personnel arrived. The man refused first aid at the scene, police said.

In Seaside Heights, four swimmers reportedly got caught in a strong current around 3:30 p.m. and were pulled to safety. Further details on that incident were not available.

Rip current conditions are likely to persist along the coast for a few more weeks, with Tropical Storm Maria expected to make its way north over the coming week.
