UPDATE: Mill Creek Road Reopened After Man Charged With Drunk Driving Hits Car, Pole

by Patricia A. Miller

Police Saturday night charged a Bayville man with driving while intoxicated after his truck struck a parked car, then hit a utility pole and a fence on Mill Creek Road, Sgt. Peter La Rocca said.

Robert Parliament, 46, Sherman Avenue, was traveling southbound on Mill Creek in his Dodge Dakota pickup truck at 7:30 p.m. when his vehicle struck a parked car, La Rocca said.

"He hit it from behind," he said. "That pushed it onto the lawn of 134 Mill Creek Road. Before it went onto the lawn it hit a telephone pole and went right through the pole."

The pole was still attached to the overhead wires and no power was lost. But pole was damaged and has to be replaced, La Rocca said.

The truck also struck a fence before finally coming to rest on the lawn, he said.

Patrolman D.J. Williams arrested Parliament and charged him with drunk driving. He was taken to police headquarters, where he was processed and released. His truck was impounded per John's Law, La Rocca said.

Mill Creek Road is now open to traffic, police said. It was closed between Mill Creek Drive and Cape May Avenue last night.

The Bayville Volunteer Fire Company, Bayville First Aid Squad and the Ocean Gate Police Department also responded.
