Reported Choking Victim Dies Despite Rescue Efforts

Assistance was sought for choking victim at Bum Rogers Restaurant in South Seaside Park

An individual believed to be the victim of choking at a restaurant in South Seaside Park this afternoon has died at Community Medical Center, authorities from the confirmed.

Police would not release any information on the identity of the person while the family is being notified.

Just after 5 p.m., the Tri-Boro First Aid Squad responded to a call from for a person who was reportedly choking.

“One officer from Berkeley Township, Michael O’Connor, and another officer from Seaside Park performed CPR on the victim until the first aid squad could arrive,” said Sgt. Philip Smith of the Berkeley Township Police Department.

The person was transported to Community Medical Center with CPR in progress, and scanner reports said Toms River police were being asked to clear the intersections along Route 37 for the ambulance.

Efforts to revive the person were not successful, and the victim died at the hospital, Smith said.
