Power Being Restored to Different Sections of Township After a Long, Hot Night

Residents who may still be without power this morning following yesterday's accident on Route 9 can get some relief from the heat at several cooling centers.

The Berkeley Little League complex on Moorage Avenue, St. Barnabas R.C. Church on Woodland Road and the media room at the Clara B. Worth Elementary School are available, Sgt. James J. Smith Jr. said.

Roughly 1,700 residents in Bayville, Sylvan Lakes, Pinewald and Berkeley Shores lost power shortly after 3 p.m. Friday, when a pick-up truck slammed into a utility pole at Moorage Avenue and Route 9, Smith has said.

The impact toppled the pole and damaged transformers and circuits, JCP&L officials told Smith and Varano yesterday.

Traffic on Route 9 North is still being detoured to Sloop Creek Road. Motorists can take Sloop Creek to Moorage, then back out to Route 9, he said.

Traffic on Route 9 South is open.

The name of the driver and details of the accident will be available later today, Smith said.

"It was such a hectic scene out there," he said.

Police had to direct traffic in 100-degree heat after several traffic lights went out because of the accident.

Smith said it was 92 degrees in his house when he arrived home last night.
