Police Looking for Subject Who Threw Large Rock Through Patrol Car Window

Officer taken to Community Medical Center with eye injury

A township police officer was injured early this morning when someone threw a large rock through his patrol car window, Detective Sgt. James J. Smith said.

Patrolman David Burke was on patrol on Route 9 between Cosmos Auto Body and WaWa, when an unknown person or persons threw the rock into the windshield around 12:28 a.m., Smith said.

"The glass shattered and struck the officer in the face, arm and neck," Smith said.

Bayville First Aid Squad members examined Burke in the parking lot of the Kamy Dental Center, then transported him to Community Medical Center in Toms River.

Doctors were able to remove glass lodged in one of Burke's eyes and he was later released, Smith said.

When asked if anything similar to this had ever happened before, Smith replied "Not that I can recall."

Burke did not see who threw the rock, Smith said.
