A pedestrian who police say was intoxicated tried to cross Route 37 just after midnight Monday, but was struck by a vehicle before she and a friend could make it across the lanes of the highway.

Police went to the area of Route 37 and Gladney Avenue after a driver, identified as Nina Incorvaia, 22, of Stockholm, Sussex County, called 911 and told dispatchers that she believed she struck something with her 2009 Audi.

Incorvaia pulled over immediately to call police, said Ralph Stocco, police spokesman.

When Officer Michael DeRosa arrived, it was found that the vehicle had struck Crystal L. Scholz, 37, of Cable Avenue in Beachwood.

Scholz had been crossing Route 37 in a southerly direction with her friend Daniel Wilson, 21, of Gladney Avenue in Toms River, said Stocco.

As she stepped off of the center grass median into traffic, Stocco said, Scholz was struck by the driver’s side front fender and bumper area of the Audi, causing a laceration and swelling to her head, face, and temple area as well as other non-life threatening injuries.

She was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Treatment for treatment of her injuries.

Scholz and Wilson were both believed by police to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident and were issued summonses for crossing the highway without using the crosswalk.

No charges will be filed against the driver of the car, Stocco said.

Saddest thing is...if she were seriously injured or died, this poor girl who hit her would have to live with that for the rest of her life. All because of a drunken fool.
