Police Charge Saddle River Man With Drunk Driving After Car Hits Utility Pole

A Saddle River man was arrested for driving while intoxicated after his Range Rover struck a utility pole then overturned on Veeder Lane in the early morning hours of May 24, Police Chief Karin T. DiMichele said.

Berkeley police responded to single-car crash at 2:30 a.m. on Veeder Lane near Storm Jib Court. They found an overturned Range Rover on the side of the road and a downed utility pole, with fallen wires across the roadway, the chief said.

The driver, Austin J. Lapes, 19, was charged with DWI. He was taken to Community Medical Center by the Bayville First Aid Squad. Bayville Fire Department members assisted, DiMichele said.

Patrolman David Moody of the traffic safety bureau is investigating.
