UPDATE: Manahawkin Woman: "A Tornado Literally Hit The Property"

Woman took pictures of Manahawkin Baptist Church after it was struck

The peaceful mid-week calm for Laura Westmoreland of Manahawkin ended with a sudden burst of rain, wind and a crash.

Although it would be a few hours before the National Weather Service actually confirmed her suspicions, Westmoreland already had an idea what bashed through her street, and tore the roof off the Manahawkin Baptist Church Tuesday morning.

"A tornado literally hit the property where Mitch & I are staying," she said in a text, before snapping a photo of a tree falling at a church across the street.

An tornado reportedly touched down in the Manahawkin area and damaged area property, including the Manahawkin Baptist Church on Hilliard Boulevard.

"We're OK but have no electricity & housebound," she also wrote.

National Weather Service officials determined it was a tornado that ripped through sections of Stafford Township and LBI on Tuesday.

National Weather Service citizen "spotters" generally reported winds between 60 to 65 miles per hour when heavy rain and winds moved in mid-morning.

Rainfall amounts in some areas of Ocean County reached as high as six inches, NWS officials said.
