UPDATE: Massive Berkeley Brush Fire Nearly…

Freeholder Director's Daughter Pleads Guilty To Stealing $40,000 From Little Egg Harbor

Dawn Marie Kelly worked in tax assessor's office in Little Egg Harbor

Freeholder Director John P. Kelly's 30-year-old daughter has pleaded guilty to the theft of more than $40,000 during the time she worked in the tax assessor's office in Little Egg Harbor Township, the state Attorney General's Office said.

Dawn Marie Kelly, Eagleswood Township, made the admission when she pleaded guilty to an accusation of third-degree theft by unlawful taking on Dec. 14 before Ocean County Superior Court Judge James M. Blaney, said Rachel Goemaat, a spokesperson for the Attorney General's Office said today.

Kelly worked as the deputy tax collector in Little Egg Harbor and has since resigned, she said.

The thefts took place between Nov. 11 of 2011 and July 31 of 2012. The Little Egg Harbor Township police referred the matter to the state Attorney General's Office, Goemaat said.

The bulk of the money was paid back prior to the plea agreement, but there is still an outstanding balance of $6,500, Goemaat said.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office also referred the matter to the state Attorney General's Office because of potential conflicts of interest, Executive Assistant Prosecutor Michel A. Paulhus said today.

Little Egg Committeeman Ed Nutall told Patch: "The important thing is this was discovered. It is regretful, but hopefully justice has now been done."

Come back to Berkeley Patch for more information on this developing story later.

Call Kellys office 732-929-2003 and tell him to pay the $6,500 due to the Twp. They should check John Kelly books

Why was it down graded to third-degree????

Why was it down graded to third-degree???? Anybody else it would not be

She has not been sentenced. The AG is recomending probation
Frankie January 17, 2013 at 05:58 PM
Somebody should call the FBI to investigate who made the recommendation, the judge who accepted it and the freeholder who brokered it.

Has anyone asked Mr. Kelly if he withdrew from the Sheriff's race or is he still going for it?
Don Lee January 17, 2013 at 09:56 PM
Bet her dad already paid the rest---maybe she needs to be responsible for this final amount. It is a tragedy that our young people are losing their youth, their opportunity, their lives, their very souls to drugs---NO MATTER WHOSE CHILD! MAYBE THE CRAP drug dealer ought to pay......in more ways than one---the dealer is probably a junkie too---such a pyramid.

I'm sure they were hoping it never come to light in the papers, that why no one heard about this before. They tried to bury it.
Bryan January 17, 2013 at 10:42 PM
Why in the world would Mr Kelly need to withdraw from anything? His daughter did this, not him.
Radio Roaddog January 17, 2013 at 10:54 PM
Rumors have it this was not the first time Ms Kelly was caught with her hand in the cookie jar. And the Little Egg Harbor Mayor was covering for the thief in hopes he would be tapped for a freeholder run when Jack Kelly moved... Like I said, rumors, but the Mayor's girlfriend runs the tax collector department where the taxpayers funds were being stolen for months if not years without detection?

Carol, Agreed...It is ultimately the daughters bad behavior and dishonesty. She should be the one who should be held responsible and held accountable. It is possible that her parents did not hold her responsible for anything growing up. Some kids continually get away with bad behavior therefore they never learn. Some parents make excuses for their kids no matter what they do. I don't know if that was the case. Maybe the father should have said, enough you are on your own on this. Maybe she would learn. Now, your father might have great character. It surely sounds that way. Not everyone has great character. Never did and never will. I agree with your dad. I don't know how old you are? But kicking a kids behind today will end a parent in jail. I will tell you this, In my years I have seen a lot of Mayors kids, pretty much anyone politically connected or with clout in all the different towns from south to north of NJ, schools, township employees, police officials kids or family members get special treatment in many different ways. Including getting out of whole lot of trouble, stealing from town jobs, along with breaking a lot of laws. They would sweep it under the rug. A lot of towns people new and just looked the other way.

Does anyone know if Kelly is up for re-election this year?
proud January 17, 2013 at 11:33 PM
I said it before and I'll say it again: the superiors in town hall as well as the governing body should be held accountable to the taxpayers for their failure by allowing this to happen. This is not to say that the thief should not be.
Patty O' Rourk January 17, 2013 at 11:38 PM
Not for nutin, but has anyone ever really taken alook at this dude? I mean geez, what else would he be able to do?
rusty January 18, 2013 at 12:06 AM
Its called discipline. Make your kids be responsible and accountable. Do you know what my parents told my siblings and I. We are poor, if you get in trouble we have no money to get you out. We do not know anyone special, popular or with power. So if you do the crime you pay the time. You will stay in jail. That was always in the back of our mind. Guess what? I tell my children the same thing.
rusty January 18, 2013 at 12:06 AM
BTW...It works!!
aermanc January 18, 2013 at 12:36 AM
ff......I think the outrage is the fact that because of the fathers status, is why this was kept on the quiet side and was not treated like others would have been and for that Freholder Kelly should be ashamed of himself. As a public representative he is shouting "I'm above the law" : )
JD January 18, 2013 at 02:55 AM
Bryan, your kidding. She is a drug addict. She did drugs in her home... under Daddy's nose. If didn't know, he shouldn't be sheriff. If he did know and did nothing about it, he shouldn't be sheriff.
Tip Semone January 18, 2013 at 10:16 AM
He used to be a SkyCap at AC Airport.
Martin January 18, 2013 at 02:31 PM
Yeah, Kelly sure has a lot of baggage!
A. Nonie January 18, 2013 at 06:48 PM
what a horrible thing to say.
Jonathan January 19, 2013 at 02:33 AM
But yet the Republicans in ocean county will continue to ignore the obvious corruption going on here and continue to vote republican right on down the line. They just voted a guy on his death bed as sheriff. Wake up people! Lets get new blood into county offices. Stop voting party lines and vote against corrupt officials!
oceanstorm January 19, 2013 at 02:45 AM
In Ocean County, I guess only the little people have to follow the law
oceanstorm January 19, 2013 at 02:46 AM
Kelly is up for re-election this year.

Sharon Caldwell, 58, of Trenton, was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Thomas M. Brown in Mercer County to 364 days in county jail as a condition of four years of probation.

Don't pay cash for your taxes! Always use a check and make sure that it says "For deposit only". That is just plain old common sense. Who pays cash for taxes. Anyway, to put a 30 year old in such a position, taking big cash like that, without a background check, on the word of the dad. It makes no sense at all to hire people like that. You are making it too easy to steal, and it will happen again.
aermanc February 01, 2013 at 10:13 PM
Lol....I always told my kids if you ended up getting arrested and put in jail, " I will come and get you when I'm good and ready" When they became adults they told me they were always afraid to get in trouble for fear I would have let them sit in jail. I guess it worked.
foggyworld February 27, 2013 at 02:34 AM
Who keeps voting them back in???
David Daur March 12, 2013 at 01:28 PM
Maybe Freeholder Kelly's accident was really no accident at all. Maybe the poor guy on the motorcycle who he ran down was a witness to his daughter Dawn's theft and the Freeholder was just tying up loose ends. I'd like to know what drug she wasted 40k on? What was her drug of choice?
Pamela Mickens November 18, 2013 at 10:29 AM
WOW just heard about this today and I live and work in LEH. How do they hide this stuff??? I am so disappointed in our town to push this under the rug and God knows what else :'(
