A five-mile-long traffic backup is lasting into the afternoon hours following a fatal accident in the northbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway Tuesday morning.
By 12:30 p.m., the state Department of Transportation was reporting a 5-mile backup in the northbound lanes extending from mile marker 92.5 in Brick, where the crash occurred, to mile marker 88 near Route 70 at the Brick-Lakewood border.
The right lane is blocked south of the accident site, officials said.
State Police confirmed one person died after a vehicle crashed into the woods just after 8:30 a.m. Police have not released the name of the person who died, nor additional details on what may have caused the crash.
