The Coast Guard suspended their search after searching for six hours, covering more than 17 square miles.

Local police contacted Coast Guard watchstanders at about 11:50 a.m. and reported the man was swimming and went missing in the water, the Coast Guard said in a statement. It was reported to be the man’s first time swimming in the ocean.

A 25-foot response boat and a 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew from Coast Guard Station Barnegat Light, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City and multiple local responders searched for the man.

Witnesses at Island Beach State Park told Patch that lifeguards were keeping all swimmers out of the water park-wide as many of them are partaking in the search. The surf, according to the witnesses, was rough Friday.

The missing man was reportedly swimming near area A20 of the park, which is an unguarded beach.
