Citizens Stop Barnegat Man Who Fled With Woman's Wallet

A group of concerned citizens cornered a Barnegat man in the ShopRite parking lot in Bayville after he took a wallet from an elderly woman's purse, Police Chief Karin T. DiMichele said.

Patrolman Michael O'Connor, Jason Malley and D.J. Williams responded to a report of a theft by a male at 7:45 p.m. on May 9. The man - identified as John Payton, 28 - fled the store and ran into the parking lot after the incident, the chief said.

Further investigation revealed that a woman was also involved in the theft.  When encountered by police, Heather Cavallaro, 28,  Ocean Gate, provided officers with a false name.  Cavallaro was also arrested. It was at this time that she was found to be in possession of several hypodermic syringes, the chief said.

Cavallaro and Payton were taken to police headquarters, where they were processed and released on a summonses pending a court date, DiMichele said.
