The driver, Theresa Willox, 50, of Manchester Township, was in the left lane, Mastronardy said.

The victim was transported to by Toms River First Aid squad. The police chief said she was pronounced dead shortly after the accident.

Toms River Police Detective Brian Lomer responded to the accident, with the road closed for approximately three hours after the incident. Traffic Safety Officers Brian Doyle Gary Flynn and Steven Schwartz investigated the accident along with the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department and the Ocean County Prosecutors Office.  The New Jersey DOT emergency response team assisted with detouring the traffic.

No charges were filed this evening.

The names of the driver and victim were not released.

From 10 p.m.:

The state highway's westbound lanes were expected to remain closed for approximately the next 2.5 hours from Mule Road to Bananier Road, Mastronardy said at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday.

Police cars are investigating the scene which is near the railroad tracks east of the Walmart. The Ocean County Sheriff's Department is also on the scene.

Traffic is flowing freely on Route 37 westbound until Tanager Road, when traffic is forced to merge into the Mule Road jughandle.

Once at the Mule Road jughandle, motorists can continue into Holiday City Berkeley and head west onto Jamaica Boulevard until they hit Bananier Road, which will reconnect with Route 37.

Motorists also cannot make a lefthand turn from Mule Road on to Route 37 westbound.

Another detour is in place on the Garden State Parkway at Exit 82 northbound due to an ongoing repaving on that roadway.
