Berkeley Pride Day Cut Short By Storms

Fireworks cancelled, concert not completed, mayor says

The 22nd Annual Community Pride Day in Veterans Park got off to a good start, but was cut short as the skies grew more ominous on Saturday.

"It was a good turnout overall," Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. said. "The final band, the 70s project, did a few songs and we ended up wrapping up early because of the impending storm."

The event featured rides, children's games, face painting, food, arts and crafts, exhibits from local businesses and local talents, classic cars, and 50/50 raffles and performances by The 70s Project and The Edmund Brothers.

The cost of the event was supported by sponsors and vendors.

The memorial plaque dedication ceremony to honor the late Jim Mooney of Ocean Gate and the late Don Marshall, former president of the V.F.W. Post 9503 did go off as planned, Amato said.

The fireworks show was cancelled earlier in the day because of the weather forecast, Amato said.

"Fireworks wil be included in next year's summer concert series," he said.
