Berkeley Man Killed In Parkway Construction Accident In Bass River Township

Accident happened in a closed construction zone, State Police said

A 46-year-old Berkeley Township man died yesterday in a construction accident on the Garden State Parkway, after he was struck by a Mack dump truck, State Police Sgt. Adam Grossman said.

The 11:56 a.m. accident took place in a closed construction zone near mile marker 50.1, in Bass River Township, Grossman said.

Donald Tomaio Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene. He was struck by truck operated by Michael Tedesco 56, Beachwood. Tedesco, an employee of C.J. Hesse, was backing up when the truck struck Tomaio, Grossman said.

The accident is under investigation by the New Jersey State Police, he said.

Tomaio was working for a subcontractor on the Garden State Parkway project, Grossman said.

Patch will update the story as soon as more information is available and funeral arrangements are made.

This is a sad story, two local workers involved and nobody even comments. Being in the construction field and working side by side with heavy construction workers I am personally shaken by this event. This type of accident is happening all to often in recent times, anyone that knows the families involved I am sorry for this horrible outcome. Even with all the safety oversight we are trained on, the job entails everyone to be overly aware as the unthinkable is always going to occur.
