Bayville Home Uninhabitable After Saturday Fire

A Butler Avenue home was left uninhabitable after a Saturday morning fire, but the residents of the home were able to safely escape in time for firefighters to arrive.

The 7:50 a.m. fire at 61 Butler Avenue began as a fire in the garage but eventually spread and penetrated the roof of the home, said Kenneth Anderson, Bayville Fire Chief.

Firefighters fought the blaze with an interior attack and then went into "defensive operations" once it extended to the roof, said Anderson.

"The people were home but everyone got out," he said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Ocean County Fire Marshall's office, Berkeley police and the Berkeley Township Fire Prevention Bureau.

The Bayville and Pinewald Pioneer fire companies responded, said Anderson, while Manitou Park Fire Company covered other calls and Forked River acted as a FAST team for support.
