Jersey Gets A Home

Dog homeless since Superstorm Sandy finds a new family

By Patricia A. Miller

It was nearly a year ago that Jersey's owner reluctantly surrendered him to Animal Haven Farm at Popcorn Park Zoo.

His Barnegat home destroyed by Superstorm Sandy, he could no longer keep the 90-pound Belgian Malnois he had adopted from the Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter.

At first they tried to stay in the devastated house, until the mold and cold drove them out.

"He was trying to keep him," shelter worker Sandy Hickman has said. "He was using a blanket on the dog instead of himself. He just couldn't stay with the mold and water issues."

Jersey's luck turned this weekend.

He was adopted by a family who had visited him a number of times after reading about him. They even brought their own dog in every day for a week to make sure the two would get along, according to Popcorn Park's Facebook page.

And Saturday, they took him home.

"We are absolutely thrilled to announce that finally, JERSEY GOT ADOPTED!! He got the best home ever and will be loved and cared for the way he deserves to be," Associated Humane Societies' Facebook page states. "Jersey's new family welcomed him with open arms, and promised to give him the wonderful life that he's been dreaming of. Jersey said goodbye to his old friends today and though we will miss him terribly, we are so happy for him and his new family."

There are plenty of other dogs and cats sheltered at Animal Haven Farm who need homes. To see the other animals available for adoption, visit Popcorn Park at 1 Humane Way off Lacey Road in Forked River between 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
