Council To Waive Construction Fees For Secondary Homeowners Hit By Sandy

By Patricia A. Miller

Secondary homeowners affected by Superstorm Sandy will not have to pay any construction fees for rebuilding through Jan. 1, according to a resolution slated for the Nov. 18 Township Council meeting.

"The backlog is starting," Township Council President James J. Byrnes said at a special council meeting held on Nov. 1. "Second homeowners are not eligible for any grants or money."

Many waterfront areas of town like Good Luck Point and Glen Cove are still reeling from Sandy, which struck on Oct. 29, 2012. And many of the homes that appear untouched are belong to secondary homeowners.

Byrnes suggested the governing body waive building fees for new construction on secondary homes until New Year's Day.

"A lot of the houses that are still sitting are second homes," he said. "I think it would be the right thing to do."

The Township Council previously waived all building fees for primary homes badly damaged by the storm for a year. That ended on Oct. 29, 2013. Fees will still be waived for primary homeowners who are still waiting for grant money to rebuild, Byrnes said.
