With less than a month remaining in a hurricane season that ends Nov. 30, the East Coast remains unaffected by any 2013 storm.

The Atlantic Ocean is free of any tropical storm as of Saturday (Nov. 2), and forecasters see no features that signal the development of a tropical system any time soon.

The news is welcome after Hurricane Sandy caused record flooding and billions of dollars of damage to the Mid-Atlantic in October 2012.

The midpoint of the six-month hurricane season passed on Sept. 1, before the Atlantic Ocean saw its first named hurricane (for only the sixth time since 1950). The season's only two hurricanes (Humberto and Ingrid) came in September, and neiither affected the U.S.

Aside from the heavy rain dumped by the remnants of tropical storms Andrea (early June) and Karen (early October), Berkeley Township has not seen rain, wind or waves from any of the 12 named tropical storms in 2013.

Forecasters had predicted an above-average hurricane season for 2013 — calling for 18 named storms, nine of them hurricanes and four major hurricanes (category three or higher).

Storms receive a name when they reach tropical storm status (sustained winds of 39 mph). They become hurricanes when sustained winds reach 74 mph. Category three hurricanes have sustained winds of 111 mph or higher.
