The Federal Budget Deficit is estimated at 16 Trillion Dollars.
If minimum wage is raised to 8 dollars an hour, and a worker works fifty weeks per year, at forty hours per week, what are their annual wages. Assume in this economy, that there is no overtime.

Answer: $ 16,000.00 CORRECT!!
Assume Shelley Adler's accusation of Jon Runyan as to being responsible for 40 Billion in Oil Company Subsidies is true. (it's not - not that I am defending Mr. Runyan, mind you - but he's not really responsible for much). What would be the equivalent fraction of one year's minimum wage income in US Dollars as the subsidies are to the deficit?
$ 16,000,000,000,000 (yup, that's 16 MILLION MILLION, folks)
$ 40,000,000,000 (a big number, but is it significant?)
Remove the rightmost NINE decimal places.
$ 16,000.00
$ 40.00
Oh.
Is 40 Billion a lot of money? Yes, it is.
Relative to the deficit (what we're OVERDRAWN on our budget - which,
incidentally, BOTH parties have failed to produce in over 1200 days...), is 40
Billion SIGNIFICANT?
Important? Yes. Significant?
NO.
Put this in perspective...if you bought a 24 oz coffee every day at Dunkin Donuts on the way to work - about 2 bucks in NJ - It's a four week's supply.
Neither of them are apparently very good at math.
Here's one last one for you....
To make the math easy, let's call the population of the US 333,333,333...that's actually really close to the 2010 Census.
That makes the deficit 3 dollars for every billion, right? A Trillion is A THOUSAND BILLION.
The budget SHORTFALL (deficit) is 3000 dollars right now for every man, woman and child in the US, citizen or not, for every Trillion dollars.
That's 16 (TRILLION) x $ 3000.00 per Trillion = $ 48,000.00
EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US IS OVERDRAWN by $ 48,000 dollars, thanks to the present Congress, and the preceding ones. The Democrats and Republicans keep talking about a fiscal cliff. They are BOTH it's author and finisher.
That 16 Trillion is not the budget, mind you. That's the budget DEFICIT.
No wonder they won't produce a budget. If we knew THOSE numbers...well....
