IMAGES: Scenes From Hurricane Sandy: Before And After

Toms River, Pine Beach, Beachwood and Bayville got hit hard ... before and after Sandy came through. Here are photos and videos that tell the tale.

Here are scenes from Toms River, Pine Beach, Beachwood and Bayville, before Sandy made landfall on Monday evening and on Tuesday, after the worst of it had passed.

On Tuesday, the devastation was clear even inland. Trees took down power lines throughout the area, and in several areas JCP&L shut off power to prevent sparking lines from setting fires.

Route 9 had heavy traffic on Tuesday morning and into the afternoon. Some people were out getting supplies to get through the coming days. Some were out checking on family members. And many people were out checking out the damage.

Most businesses were closed and without power. A few -- ShopRite, Subway and Little John's Deli -- were actually open for a time. Residents said Little John's was giving out coffee until the store's power went out.

Roads going east from Route 9 were blocked off to traffic to keep away onlookers, with officials in Ocean Gate blocking Ocean Gate Avenue with two dump trucks to prevent access to town.

At Central Regional High School, the solar panel field seemed to be untouched, but evidence of Sandy's strength could be seen in the soccer goals that were thrown around like toys on the field behind the school.

Bayview Avenue in Bayville was impassable, under at least two feet of water that rushed through the street like it was a creek, as Barnegat Bay flooded over the salt marsh and stayed put. The flooding reached as far as Blue Jay Avenue overnight Monday into Tuesday, residents said, and had only receded a block and a half by midday Tuesday.

By nightfall on Tuesday, a few areas of Bayville had their power back. Residents along Grand Central Avenue were connected again, and other parts of town were coming back slowly.

Downed trees -- and dealing with them -- was delaying the return of power in other areas.
