Phones at police headquarters are out and several structural fires burned as Berkeley woke up to the devasation of Hurricane Sandy.
Roads are impassible in the low-lying and waterfront sections. Transformers blew overnight as a burning smell lingered along Route 9.

Mandatory Evacuations & Shelters
In conjunction with our Berkeley Township OEM, based on current information from the National Weather Service, we have called for mandatory evacuations of the waterfront sections of Bayville that are EAST of Bayview Avenue along with those waterfront sections of Bayville that are within a 1,000 feet of the Atlantic Ocean, The Barnegat Bay and the Toms River. Mayor's Declaration of a State of Emergency
Due to the hurricane, sanitation and recycling pick up has been suspended for Monday October 29th and Tuesday October 30th. Anyone who lives in a flood prone area to utilize the Central Regional Middle School Parking lot to park a car away from flood waters. Please secure boats and boat trailers.
