Berkeley Devastated

Roads impassible; police nearly unreachable

Phones at police headquarters are out and several structural fires burned as Berkeley woke up to the devasation of Hurricane Sandy.

Roads are impassible in the low-lying and waterfront sections. Transformers blew overnight as a burning smell lingered along Route 9.

From Berkeley's website:

Mandatory Evacuations & Shelters

In conjunction with our Berkeley Township OEM, based on current information from the National Weather Service, we have called for mandatory evacuations of the waterfront sections of Bayville that are EAST of Bayview Avenue along with those waterfront sections of Bayville that are within a 1,000 feet of the Atlantic Ocean, The Barnegat Bay and the Toms River. The Mandatory evacuation is effective noon, Monday October 29th. ...More

Mayor's Declaration of a State of Emergency

Due to the hurricane, sanitation and recycling pick up has been suspended for Monday October 29th and Tuesday October 30th. Anyone who lives in a flood prone area to utilize the Central Regional Middle School Parking lot to park a car away from flood waters. Please secure boats and boat trailers.

My sister and her husband live in Bayville at Sonata Bay S/Div. I am in GA. They do not have power. I don't know if you can tell me when power around that area will be restored, but if you are able, I will relay info to them. Thank you for any info you can give me. I live in Bayville on Brittany Drive in the Oak Crest development. We've had no power since 5P yesterday and have yet to hear anything about it being restored!

I tried to call a power company to report an outage for the Bayville area for my sister and all others, but I could not get through the automated message line that said, "Due to high volume and Sandy, etc., please call back at another time" or something like that. I wish I could help more, but being here in Georgia I feel a bit helpless.

Does anyone in Bayville, NJ have power yet? My sister and her husband who is in hospice care are at their home and I cannot get hold of them. If anyone has an estimated time of power return, please let me know. I keep trying to call her cell phone but nothing. Thanks for any info.

Freedom of the press is one of our countires most vital rights and needs to be protected, literally at all costs. Without the ability for the average citizen to investigate, critiicise, praise and comment on government, business, education and all facets of our lives the Great American Democracy would not exist - even if it does produce annonymous curmudgeons like the Chief and the rest of the fan club. ;-) That being said, the digital media world is still trying to find its way into a viable business model. I was very excited about the 'hyper' local idea of the Patch, but the challenges you mentioned are real. However, I do feel based on my dealing with the Patch on several levels (blogger, community person & advertiser) the corporate leadership does not quite get the 'hyper-local' idea - they like it only if it produces revenue. What comes firt guys, the classic 'chicken or the egg'. Advertising is all about numbers, and in our community that was tough to overcome - I see both sides. It was a pleasure having a 'hometown' reporter that actually had the knowledge, perspective and understanding of our community as only one that lives here can. You will be missed on these pages, but it will be still be good to see you around town! So good luck to you in Lacey & Barnegat, Ill be happy to share any of my contacts, never dull there either! You stood right outside the doors and tried to talk to voters also, you did this at all the polling places. You had 3 challengers to 1 republican challenger at the polls, so how could all that you say get done. Why didn't they call the election board? Come on Fran, just admit the people DO REMEMBER and that is why you lost.
