Pelican Island Residents Threaten Legal Action to Halt ‘Snooki’ Filming

Residents blast plan to film MTV show in their neighborhood; Berkeley officials say they were kept in the dark on the matter

An attorney representing a group of Pelican Island residents has threatened legal action against Berkeley Township as well as the production company behind the MTV show “Snooki and JWoww” to stop filming of the show from taking place in their neighborhood.

The threat came after several residents of Pelican Island blasted Mike Loundy, the owner of the home where filming is poised to take place, for failing to inform officials and neighboring residents of his plans to lease his property at 515 Sunset Drive South to 495 Productions, which is responsible for the show.

"Snooki and JWoww" is a reality show that follows former “Jersey Shore” cast members Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Jennifer “JWoww” Farley. News emerged last week that the show would film its next season in the local area, including at the Pelican Island home.

“This property is a residential house within a residential zone,” said Ronald Gasiorowski, a Red Bank-based land use attorney who told the Berkeley Township council at its meeting Monday night that he had been retained by a group of local residents to oppose the filming of the show. “They are seeking to turn this house into a movie production studio. It's not someone who is living in this house as a resident, or having a summer vacation there. They're taking this house and they're converting it into a commercial use.”

Township officials said at the same meeting that the council’s legislative committee would review a proposal to create a film permitting ordinance to govern television productions in town, though it would not be introduced for another two weeks. It would then require a second vote and public hearing before it could become law, likely after the filming of the show will have been completed.

Gasiorowski said if township zoning officers do not shut down production based on use violations, he would bring legal action against the township forcing them to do so. He also said he would likely engage in legal action against MTV and 495 Productions.

The threat of legal action came after several residents said their quiet neighborhood – which is still largely in shambles due to damage from Superstorm Sandy – was being disturbed by both productions crews and people coming in both cars and boats to view the house.

“We need to find a way to keep people off the island,” said Sue Kosakowski, who lives on the same street as the production house. “Boats are circling the house, going by and taking pictures.”

Another island resident, Lori Tyska, said township inspectors were sent away from the island due to the commotion of crews setting up for the show, leading potentially to residents failing to receive building approvals as they make repairs to their homes.

“The other day, I had six cars behind me,” she said. “Everybody was beeping their horns. It was nuts.”

Neighbor ‘Sold Us Out’

Kosakowski placed blame for the Snooki debacle on Mike Loundy, the owner of the home where production is set to take place.

Loundy, a realtor in Seaside Heights, also owned the Ocean Terrace house in that borough where the original Jersey Shore cast stayed during production.

“The biggest thing we're offended about is that one of our own Pelican Island residents would sell us out,” said Kosakowski.

Berkeley Township Administrator Christopher Reid said township officials were not provided details on what type of filming would take place in the house. His office was notified that an MTV show would be shot there after residents caught wind of the plan and called town hall, he said.

“Before that, there was no detail that was provided to anyone on the council or the mayor,” said Reid.

Likewise, Mayor Carmen Amato said the extent of the information his office was given was that “a young mother and a child would be in the house and they would be filming for a limited number of days.”

“He fooled his neighbors, he fooled you,” said Gasiorowski, to township officials. “What they tried to do, basically, is sneak one by you.”

No one answered the phone at Loundy’s real estate office Monday night.

Reid said township zoning officers have already identified zoning violations at the house and have issued summonses regarding them. Officers will keep up with future activity at the house, however he said it was not clear any filming had taken place.

The township has also gotten 495 Productions to agree to hire off-duty Berkeley Township police officers to provide extra security near the house at their own cost.

One resident who came to the meeting urged calm.

“Take a wait and see attitude instead of having a knee-jerk response to what is going on,” said Mark Wade. “I support Mike Loundy. He's a good neighbor, a good person, and he helps everyone on that island.”

“The focus should remain on rebuilding the island, and not tearing it apart.”

Have any of you complainers ever watch Snooki and JWow? Snooki was loud and obnoxious in the beginning, so was JWow. Snooki has a baby now, and if you saw the last 2 seasons, she has matured quite a bit. And JWow has been recently engaged to Roger. They have shown how much they have grown over the years and they should continue to do so as long as people will watch. Whenever something is filmed in a town, the town receives income. Income helps the residents. It's a win win. Let them film. It will be over in no time and on to the next house. If you are so worried, why don't you call Chris Christie in and have him throw on his cape and save the world. Those kids have done show much to help restore the shore that brings in money from tourism. How many of you have helped out? have you been effected by the hurricane? Well then stand up, brush yourselves off, and help each other, and the shore, and forget about piddly ass crap like this. You have more important things to do with your lives like rebuild them. I imagine there are kids who are under aged that party and drink in town and make a hell of a lot more noise then Snooki and JWow do which most of the time was filmed INDOORS or off location from their last house. RELAX!! chill out and move on.

I have never watched the show, know people that moved away that watch just to see the area they love. I've been to the boardwalk while they were filming, didn't really care. We are really going to waste taxpayer money fighting this? it will be over in a few weeks.
joyce July 24, 2013 at 07:56 AM
Why don't they put the pictures of Snooki laying on the boardwalk with the police picking her up and arresting her. How about the pictures of JWoW peeing on peoples cars every time she goes out. How about Ronnie beating other guys up. Not those sweet headshots.

o proud thats funny you said that to ms money island because on the corner by the 7-11 sits a homeless guy every day! no panhandling but accepts gifts

Stepford Island needs to give it a rest. You claim to be so worried about traffic and what not yet most of the comments on here and other blogs are about how they look, talk, smell...what they wear. You are snobs and for no good reason. Pelican Island is ok...but not a place where anyone could or should sit on a throne. Who are you to judge anyone? You are a "pass thru". That's it.
Luis July 24, 2013 at 10:20 AM
I don't know the financial situation of this town but if it anything like other small towns it is probably strapped for cash and is looking for some income from the filming. That said the residents can probably be assured that most people have had enough of Snooki and the show will be off the air in a short amount of time. She's just another non-celebrity looking to extend her 15 minutes.
Michael Capo July 24, 2013 at 11:52 AM
The title of the show is wrong. It shouldn't be Snooki and Jwow...it should be JERSEYSHORE..THE NEXT GENERATION. It wont be long before the rest of the cast shows up. Good luck Pelican Island you will need it. Wait until the word gets out and the traffic jams start on Rt 37 and the streets in PI are gridlocked with worshipers of the cult that has become JERSEY SHORE. The "its good for business" argument will not hold on PI like it did in Seaside because there are NO businesses on PI except a marina. PI should do everything they can to nip this in the bud.

Maybe @Michael Capo is on to something. The crew should rent a house in Ortley behind a skimpy homeowner association dune. You know, those dunes that made the shore what it is today?
JM July 24, 2013 at 12:14 PM
Hey Johnnie C you are entitled to your own opinion and so are the rest of us! You have not changed my mind!
proud July 24, 2013 at 01:06 PM
@JM really makes a lot of sense!
Michael Capo July 24, 2013 at 05:24 PM
Proud you should know that the reason Ortley is a mess today is not because of our association dunes, it is because of the lack of dunes on Ortley public beach. I have seen you on these discussions about the very subject so I think you have some insight. The mayor of tr and the town council have already admitted that better dunes would have lessened the damage in Ortley. If you like, I can show you first hand how all of our associations houses fared far better than the ones behind Ortley public dunes. Not one of our houses was swept into the middle of Route 35 like some from Ortley public beach were. A picture is worth a thousand words. I would be happy to escort you around and show you what really happened. I think I can convince you.

i am not an angry person but i do admit some things bother me so if i come off angry i apologize ms money..happy you had no damage but soooooooooo many people i know werent quite as lucky...take care and god bless

you all make me laugh. what a joke this is. if a movie company wanted to come in n film would you all be acting like this. mind u they will be using trailers n a lot more people would be there. it does not matter which star would be filming. so for a few weeks u people are acting like lil babies. get on with life n let them film. the girls are a lot different then when they 1st started out. they are busy with their jobs n life. I would not mind they filming near me. I would welcome it. after all it is no different where I live. my area is always busy n a lot more on weekends. I fine with it. I welcome Nicole n Jenny.

@Mike C, I responded to you at length, and haven't been back to this thread as it hasn't been hit. As happened many times yesterday, posts just disappeared. this has been a frequent occurence since the new format. Ill rewrite it and get back to you later. No can do right now.
barb July 25, 2013 at 07:54 PM
so anyway, as reported on the observer, it's a no go for them filming there, residential area but the way I read it, is they have 10 days from receipt of letter to respond? much filming can get done in 10 days, I'd think (as I said on a blog somewhere on the BPatch).

@Michael Capo, I read you loud and clear. I completely understand why Ortley is what it is today.Toms River Twsp. And the HOA's have to get over the blame game and understand that the obstinacy of each other has caused substantial damage to so many, including yourselves. The skimpy dunes in Ortley, like Mantoloking is why these communities are wiped out. Having a few buildings standing is NOT a win. You can't convince me of anything @MC, I've already seen it and been there. Sign!
Michael Capo July 26, 2013 at 08:30 AM
Proud.... Seemed to me like you were perpetuating the blame game in your description of the " skimpy homeowner dunes". Maybe I read too much into it.
proud July 26, 2013 at 08:37 AM
proud July 26, 2013 at 08:36 am Not at all @ MC. Just telling it the way it is. The areas with the skimpiest dunes were most affected during Sandy. Where there were engineered dunes, the adjacent areas fared much better. Now, if individual property owners, associations AND municipalities (of which there are far too many) would get out of their own way, the populace and the very valuable infrastructure stands to be better protected should we experience more catastrophic weather events.

It is great that Jersey Shore productions and Snooki were stopped from filming in Pelican Island. The homeowner Mike Loundy does not even live their. He lives in Pt. Pleasant. He just owns rental property on Pelican Island. He just was looking to make a quick buck at others expense. They were paying him 10K a week for 8 weeks. Now they township is going to fine him.

Can anyone confirm this rumor posted on the Berkeley Patch Opinion Board today.: Posted by Bill Kosakowski , August 16, 2013 at 10:06 AM Judge orders Snookie and company to stop filming or go to jail. He will not allow them to pay a daily fine and keep on filming on Pelican Island

proud August 17, 2013 at 10:28 AM
Perhaps, the filming concluded and there's just another empty house on Pelican Island and a not so empty suit with full pockets.
