Irene's Aftermath: Scenes Around Berkeley and Ocean Gate

Low-lying areas deal with flooding; trees, wires down

Here's some views from around town of some of the damage Irene left in her wake.

Mayor Jason J. Varano and emergency management officials have said areas of South Seaside Park, Pelican Island, Glen Cove and Good Luck Point were hit the hardest by the storm.

Al Stokely, who moved to Brennan Concourse in 1947, said he's seen two storms that were just as bad: in 1950 and in 1992.

"In '92, the water was all the way to Bayview Avenue," Stokely, who now lives in Silver Ridge Park, said as he stood taking photos a couple of blocks east of Bayview. During the 1950 storm, "I remember my dad having to put on his waders and walk down to my grandfather's house -- he lived a couple of blocks down (closer to the bay) -- to take him provisions."

Dave Jacobsen of Brennan Concourse said the biggest problem they were having was onlookers trying to drive out to Berkeley Island Park to see what the storm had wrought, because drivers passing through the flooded road were pushing water against -- and into -- their homes.

"Slow down!" he yelled to more than one passing truck. "You're sending water into my house!"

Many roads in neighboring Ocean Gate were also flooded. Much of the small borough lined by the Toms River and Barnegat Bay was under a mandatory evacuation by Friday afternoon.
