Mountainside Rotary Promotes "Preserve Planet Earth" at the Mountainside PTA Fall Festival

The Rotary Club of Mountainside participated this past Saturday, October 19th in the annual Fall Festival at the Deerfield School sponsored by the Mountainside PTA.  For no charge, the Rotary Club gave out reusable grocery tote bags to all those attending the festival.  Rotary International with its “Preserve Planet Earth” initiative supports many projects devoted to promoting a better and cleaner world environment.  In that regard, the Rotary Club of Mountainside choose to provide the grocery totes which when used will ultimately diminish the amount of plastic bags that wind up in our landfills.

Recognizing the need to address the growing environmental crisis, Rotary International launched its Preserve Planet Earth focus in 1990. This initiative underscored the commitment already evident in a wide range of Rotary club projects. Many clubs are helping solve environmental problems by reforesting, establishing animal sanctuaries, reducing toxic waste, sponsoring educational activities, and promoting ecological practices.

Preserve Planet Earth projects foster concern for the global environment and sustainable development. Sustainable development projects promote economic and social progress that alleviates poverty and preserves the environment for future generations. Projects are supported by agencies of the United Nations, governments, and community organizations such as Rotary International.

Improving the environment has been central to Rotary service from the organization's earliest days. Spurred by the example of Rotary founder Paul Harris, who stopped to plant many a tree during his world travels, Rotarians have planted millions of trees, created parks large and small, and carried out recycling activities in communities all over the globe. In 1990, Rotary International endorsed a focus on Preserve Planet Earth as a way to promote awareness among Rotarians and increase the number of Rotary environmental service projects.

Rotarians help better the community and the world.  Come join the Mountainside Rotary Club for lunch any Monday except legal holidays from 12:15 – 1:15PM at Famous Dave’s on Route 22 East in Mountainside.
