New Jersey Governor Debate: Buono vs. Christie

In the first gubernatorial debate last night, Governor Christie had the near impossible task of defending his failed leadership over the last four years – and he simply couldn't do it.

Little was new for the nearly 1,000 attendees or those who tuned in to watch on television; Governor Christie stood by the trickle-down economic philosophy that’s left New Jersey with 400,000 out of work and the highest poverty rate in five decades. Also far from a surprise, Christie all but confirmed that he intends to run for president in 2016, noting that he “can walk and chew gum at the same time.”

Barbara won last night. While Governor Christie was clearly concerned about his future, she stayed focused on ours.

For Barbara, the debate was simply an extension of her record of standing up for middle- and working class New Jerseyans.

“I will never balance my budget on the backs of the middle-class and working-poor,” she said.

Barbara outlined a vision for New Jersey centered on building up the middle class by providing much needed property tax relief, investing in public education, and standing up for those who need a voice in Trenton. On every issue – from reducing gun violence to defending the right of gay and lesbian New Jerseyans to marry – Barbara aligns with the views and values of the people of our state.

Christie – once again – made it clear that even if he does have a seat in the governor’s office, he doesn’t represent the people of New Jersey.

Governor Christie travels from state to state telling folks how great he’s doing in New Jersey and cracking jokes on late-night TV, but as Barbara said last night, “there’s nothing funny about what’s going on in New Jersey.”

On November 5th, after four years of failed leadership under this governor, voters will go to the polls and elect Barbara Buono, a champion for New Jersey’s middle class and working poor, as their next governor.

And the joke will be on Chris Christie.
