An eight-episode series of 'This Old House' focuses on several local homes rebuilding after Hurricane Sandy. The PBS' show will first air in October. PBS announced the show worked on an 1880s Shore Cottage in Bay Head, a 1950s Colonial in Point Pleasant, and a prefabricated new house in Manasquan. Side stories will also feature restoration projects in Mantoloking, Long Beach Island, and Ocean Grove and other local projects along the beach and the bay. Author Dan Fagin returned to the library where he spent countless hours researching his book to talk to the community whose struggles with industrial pollution it explores. An audience of locals filled Mancini Hall at Toms River's Ocean County Library branch Thursday night to hear Fagin talk about "Toms River: A Story of Science and Salvation." They are, he said, the ultimate critic. "You folks will have to be the judge, because this is your story," Fagin told the audience, some of whom lived through the era of Ciba-Geigy's chemical plant pollution and the dumping of toxic wastes at Reich Farm. Author Dan Fagin spoke with Toms River Patch about his book chronicling a dark time in the township's history
Toms River may not seem like a prime example of a town struggling with industrial pollution. But, over 60 years ago, the Jersey Shore town became home to Ciba-Geigy's chemical plant. In 1971, industrial waste was dumped at the nearby Reich Farm. Both were labeled as Superfund sites, believed to have caused increased instances of cancer in township children. "The town itself is a town like so many others," said Dan Fagin, who explores the township's dark history with pollution and its health effects in his new book, "Toms River: A Story of Science and Salvation." Films must be submitted by March 20
Original film productions from high school and college students are being accepted by the Ocean County Library for its upcoming 2013 Student Film Festival. Works submitted will be shown at a red carpet event at Toms River's library branch at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, according to a news release. Films — which can be in the categories of animation, commercial, documentary, full feature, news, sports short, public service announcement, short feature, experimental, and music video — must be submitted by March 20 and can be no longer than 20 minutes. Fundraiser for Sandy-Hit Schools at Martell's March 2
A fundraiser for two schools - one in Seaside Heights - and Shore 2 Recover will be held from 5 p.m. to midnight March 2 at Martell's on the Point Pleasant Beach boardwalk. The admission fee of $25, for non-stop live music and complimentary dinner buffet, will be donated as follows: $20 to Hugh J. Boyd Elementary School in Seaside Heights and Memorial School in Union Beach and $5 to Shore2Recover’s rebuild program. Shore 2 Recover was founded by Toni Pecunia, a resident of Point Pleasant whose home was partially-flooded by the storm, according to the organization's website. A theater company formed to bring the arts to Toms River will raise funds for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts with their production of Broadway For The Beach 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Ocean County Arts and Cultural Center on the Ocean County College Campus in Toms River. "We wanted to do something easy and give people a good escape and fun night out," said show producer Sean Openshaw. Americans are used to watching telethons for desperate and needy people around the globe. On Friday, a one-hour live benefit telethon featuring superstar guests will raise money for an issue close to home: the victims of Superstorm Sandy. Christina Aguilera, Jon Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Sting headline the event. “Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together" airs from 8-9 p.m. on NBCUniversal networks.
