UPDATE: Ocean County Power Outages

More than 170,000 customers in Ocean County are still in the dark.

Power outage numbers continued to drop slightly across the state Thursday.

According to one utility company, though, residents shouldn't expect power back any time soon from a storm it is comparing to Hurricane Katrina.

JCP&L reported in a release on Wednesday that the majority of customers will be restored within the next seven days. However, it could take up to two weeks for customers in the hardest-hit areas to regain power, the company said.

JCP&L reported about 822,000 of its nearly 1.1 million customers remained in the dark as of about 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, according to its outage map. The number includes 170,303 in Ocean County, down from the 202,655 who were without power late Wednesday night.

“The damage from Hurricane Sandy far exceeds what we saw from Hurricane Irene or the October 2011 snowstorm,” said Don Lynch, president of JCP&L, in a release.

“While we were better prepared for Hurricane Sandy, the damage rivals that experienced during Hurricane Katrina, one of our nation’s most devastating and expensive hurricanes. In preparing for Hurricane Sandy, we positioned 1,600 line crews and 1,200 forestry professionals prior to the storm even making landfall.”

At the peak, more than 1 million of JCP&L’s 1.1 million customers were without power.

My parents are in Leisure village and are elderly, they are cold, misserable, and have had to resort to a friends home in Toms River. Whats wrong with JCP&L? The kind people of that community have been bringing meals to the club house for these folks. God Bless them. I am four hours away and due to health reasons my parents must stay in that god forsaken hell hole of a state as they get weekly treatment.

Rennaissace never lost power because they have their own generator. Clearstream Estates is also connected to that generator and did not lose power. I am across Clearstream Estates in Ridgeway Acres and have been in the dark since Monday. I also have underground utilities. Trees are still on power lines. Where are the utility trucks? And who determined that Renaissance should have their own generator and only one additional development gets linked to it??

I have a buddy that fixes substations for JCP&L. He said he believes the Drum Point substation needs serious repair. He wasn't even sure if they have the equipment needed to fix it and we should expect the worst. He's low man on the totem pole, but it's better info than anyone else is giving us. Everyone is experiencing this disaster differently. It has to be hard to be patient. I am blessed - as we have a home a block from a school, so we got fixed early...Tuesday p.m. around 10:00...We're all the way on the banks of the Delaware across from NorthEast Philly in Burlington County. My family and friends have had varying degrees of damage - from a few limbs down to "floated out to sea". Where one friend's home of 60 years once was, there is now an inlet in Mantoloking. Hundreds of people all over the State are working on this. They didn't drive here from Texas and Illinois to drink coffee. Hang in there...they ARE coming.

First off, THANK YOU to the hard working men and women from JCP&L and all the thousands of other electric companies who sent crews to assist. All other states who could spare crews sent them here to work 16 hour shifts to restore electric to us, along with the regular JCP&L employees.
Those of you complaining about not having electric need a reality check, seriously. Sure it is an inconvenience, and sure it sucks... but we all were warned it could take 7-10 days from after the storm to when power is restored. In case anyone has not read any other articles, this is the worst storm to hit the area in 100 years. NOBODY could prepare for this storm, not even God himself. JCP&L said they were prepared for a plan and extra out of state crews to begin the repair- not to get your electric on within a few hours.
If you are sitting in a dark cold house, be thankful you have a house to sit in, even though it is cold and dark- and be thankful you are alive to log into the internet to bitch about stuff. Thousands who are staring an empty lot where their house and memories were would gladly trade any of you for an un-electrified house I am sure.
Just because you have not seen an electric company truck near your house does not mean they do not care about you, or are goofing off on company time. First off they have to clear trees, then repair flooded substations, then re-run primary lines, then go street by street to connect houses. Please be understanding and keep things in perspective.

Very well said DaveL! These people who are complaining have a house that heat and electric will come back on to sit in. I've been volunteering at SRHS and those people have NOTHING and that means not even a q-tip can be found where their homes once stood. People don't seem to understand that there's a reason the power isn't on yet (downed trees, gas lines, sewers) and mostly it's to protect lives.

Karen - you are 100% on the money. People are spoiled, whiney little brats who can't handle not getting what they want when they want it. You are all selfish and sickening and the worst part is you don't see it. We were all warned that there would be a disaster at hand and power would be out for days. File a complaint that your power wasn't turned back on fast enough after all this mess - seriously???? You were told to prepare. You were asked to be patient. They can't fix 1.1 million customers at one time and god bless the men and women from the other states who left their homes and families to come here and help us. Maybe you should visit one of the HS shelters and complain to the people who were plucked from their homes and aren't allowed back. And wow, the horror of JCPL crews stopping to buy lunch, get a drink and use the bathroom while working a 16 hour shift all while you are waiting for them to flick their wrench to make your power come back.

seems like more senior delp. have power then anywhere else... Not sure why , would think Power companies would want homes that have more then 1 or maybe 2 people living in it. Brick has homes with 5 + people in one home still with nothing.. not to be mean, but a lot easier ( for a healthy) senior to go to a shelter then a entire family with pets & young children FYI Crestwood Vilage 5 only lost power for a few hrs the day of the storm //

Most senior developments have power cables underground. If the "healthy" seniors go to a shelter, where do you propose the "sick and infirmed" go? It's easier for healthy young families to go to shelters, but only God and Mother Nature gets to decide that in the end. You still have a home. Count your blessings!

I am not going to preach that one should feel fortunate to only lose power - as losing power is a major inconvenience. By the same token, this is the most densely populated state in the country that just suffered what can easily be the worst hurricance in the history of the nation. I would say feel lucky if they get the power back up and running even within the original timeframe. I know it seems random in nature, but there is also a method to their madness when they restore the power - as one person said, they live close to a school. Children need to go back to school. Hence, power restored more quickly. We all need to be patient about this - and this is all coming from a person who lost his father earlier this week and has to deal with a viewing one day, a funeral a week or two later based on what happened with the storm. Perhaps I would have a different perspective on the power going out if I didn't have something even more devastating (personally) to focus on. Just hang in there - and if you have young children, get them somewhere warm at night. There are options - please do not be too proud to use them.

You have a few options if you don't have electric. If you own a gas stove, put the oven on. Bring your mattress into your kitchen and the oven will keep you warm. You may need to light the stove with a match or lighter if it's electric startup. If you don't have a gas stove you can do the following in my next post below:

If you own a home and a car:

1. Pick up a $15 space heater from Home Depot
2. Buy a $20 converter that allows you to plug a regular outlet wire to your car's cig lighter outlet. You plug your extension cord into the converter and plug the converter into the cig lighter outlet in your car. Make sure the converter can handle 120 volts or more. They usually have smalls fans which are the ones you want.
3. Run the extension cord through the window of your car and close the window
4. Lock your car while it is running with your remote or a spare key
5. Make sure you are running your car in your driveway and not your garage as it's deadly to run it in your garage.
6. Run your space heater in ONE room. Preferably a smaller room. Bring mattresses into the room. Put blankets or sheets over the windows and do the same with the door.

Your car will run for about 3 hours in idle per gallon of gas. You will only use 2 or 3 gallons a night depending on how long you sleep.

I run my car every night to charge my phone, computer, and give me heat in one room. I heat the room up to a desired temperature, turn the car off and sleep in layer of blankets and a winter hat but can leave the car on.

It sickens me to see so many selfish self centered people complaining about not having power. I agree it does suck but I'm pretty sure it would suck more to have lost my house, car; loved one, etc. I consider myself fortunate to have only lost power and thank God for all I do have. I have witnessed the devastation first hand as I help friends who have lost most of their possessions and have to demolish and reconstruct their homes, this is a reality check that when you take the time to think about all if those that have lost so much makes you realize that losing power is not that big of a deal, layer up use extra blankets reach out to friends and neighbors, I know lots if people opening up their homes to anyone that needs a hot shower, hot meal, or even a warm bed to sleep on. Let's remember we're all in this thing together and come together as a community instead of complaining and crying ad an individual.

I really feel for everyone who is suffering through this, but I'd have to add on to all the people reminding you to have some perspective and to do something for yourself. Time to think about how you can help yourself and help your neighbors. Go next door and knock on the door and check on your neighbors, especially if they are elderly. Gas ovens are good sources of heat, but DO NOT use a grill indoors, you could suffocate. After a hurricane in Florida, we were without electricity for 8 days. It was not cold. It was 98 degrees with 90% humidity.....for eight days. So, during the day, I filled up the kiddie inflatable pool and sat in it to cool down, or took cold showers or just sat outdoors in the shade. Made coffee on the grill outside and ate canned beans heated on the same grill. We had to wait in line to buy ice so we always got an extra bag or two for our neighbors whenever we went. The power companies worked around the clock and when the power finally came back on in our neighborhood, it came on across the street, but not on my side of the street until two days later. It was an awful experience, but it was also good because I really got to know my neighbors that week and those relationships continued on after the cleanup. Reach out to each other and help each other get through this. Best wishes to all of you.

I live in Whiting Station. I have spoken with the disaster recovery team sent to my area from Connecticut, Illinois, Texas, and Georgia to repair the power lines and they are appalled at how JCP&L has bungled the effort by not letting them do their jobs. One example of this was when a team was dispatched to a major local road in whiting with many lines down from fallen trees at 10:30 am. They were not permitted to start work until a "bird dog" from JCP&L showed up to micromange the situation and grant permission for them to do their work. Well, the team sat their until 5 pm before the irepresentative from JCP&L showed up and gave them the go ahead to proceed. What an incredible waste of resources!!! And meanwhile over 500 frail seniors in Whiting Station and the Meadows are without heat, power, refrigeration, etc. JCP&L should be run out of town and replaced by another management team. PSE&G would be a good choice. You've heard the rumors that union crews are being sent out of town, and then heard it being denied by Christie. Well, it is true, I've seen it happening, and I am outraged that this huge waste of resources is happening right here because of a petty issue of jurisdiction when lives are at risk and huge amounts of emergency capital are being squandered, none of which we can afford now or ever.

For people asking is power is back on or when it will be back on type your info in to whatever company you have and that should give you the answers you need.

One hour shy of 4 days without power. Walnut Street. Came on around 2:30pm Friday. Couldn't pile enough blankets on the bed and it was still COLD! (as most of you know) 52 degrees inside. I'm not going to complain about it either. I'm thankful that's all I lost after seeing the pictures of devastation all around me. Thank you to the JCP&L crew and whoever else helped get the power back on!!!!!!

I live in Barnegat & we got power yesterday at 5 p.m. after being without it since
Monday, Oct. 29th abt. 2p.m. Thank God for Alabama Power. They worked really
hard & were such nice & polite guys. They didn't make excuses & got our power on
just when they said they would. They worked really fast because they have alot of
experience in hurricane-affected outages. JCP&L sucks; never saw them; couldn't
get hold of anyone on the phone & my daughter (another JCP&L customer) still has no power in Parsippany.
