Township Council Approves Most Professional Appointments Unanimously

Toms River firm of Gilmore and Monahan reappointed to head law department for 2013

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes and yes.

That pretty much sums up the Township Council's recent votes on the professional appointments for 2013.

Council members unanimously approved the reappointment of Toms River attorney and GOP party chief George R. Gilmore's firm to serve as township attorney for the coming year at the Jan. 4 reorganization meeting.

The Toms River Regional Board of Education earlier this week declined to renew Gilmore and Monahan's contract with the board. The firm handled legal matters during the two decades now-disgraced Michael J. Ritacco was superintendent.

Berkeley Council members also appointed Gilmore's son Michael and Dina M. Vicari - Freeholder Joseph H. Vicari's daughter - as tax attorneys for 2013. Vicari will also serve as zoning prosecutor, alternate municipal prosecutor, one of the conflict public defenders and one of the conflict township attorneys.

Alan W. Dittenhofer was reappointed as Township Engineer. James M. Oris will again serve as director of the Planning Department.

Township Administrator and Chief Financial Officer Frederick C. Ebenau was appointed to serve as administrator for another 30 days.

"We're looking to do an administrative restructuring," Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. said after the meeting. "He's doing two jobs right now. He will be part of the administration, absolutely."

Other appointments include:

• Municipal Auditor - William E. Antonides and Company

• Chief Municipal Prosecutor - Citta, Holzapfel and Zabarsky

• Open Space Planner - Remington, Vernick & Vena

• Real Estate Appraiser - Henry Mancini and Associates

• Labor Counsel - Hiering, Gannon and McKenna

• Bond Counsel - John O. Bennett of Dilworth Paxton

• Mt. Laurel Attorney - Michael A. Jedziniak

• Municipal Public Defender - Brian DiStefano

• Conflict Public Defenders - Heagen, Pagano Seems, Bianca Sangiovanni, Cafarelli and Reid. Sangiovanni is the daughter of Brick Township Councilman Joseph Sangiovanni.

• Conflict Township Attorneys - Paul Leodori, Dina M. Vicari, Gregory McGuckin, Michael A. Tier.

• Municipal Sewerage Authority - Steven Pellecchia was appointed to a five-year term. Joseph Bruscino, Jr. was appointed to a five-year term as an alternate member.

• Municipal Utilities Authority - Michael W. Hale was appointed to a five-year term. Alternate member Keith Buscio was appointed a five-year term.

Council members also appointed Dr. Cheryl Altieri and Dr. John Hudak to one-year terms as Township Chiropractors. Their fees will be only what insurance pays, Amato said after the meeting.

Dr. Theodore Ende will serve as Township Physician and Police Surgeon.

I've never heard of a Town Chiropractor until today. Just what are the duties attached to that one? It would be helpful if the Patch could dig up the salaries and benefits these folks are receiving so we can determine if this lawyer heavy crowd is something we can afford, never mind need.

And nepotism is unattractive wherever it shows up.

And a word to the wise, it would be better to include people from the "other" party because a good portion of the township's voters belong to that group. Inclusiveness really does help where deck stacking takes away from the picture you give the community.

And the bottom line is can we afford all of these folks?

Doris, you are so right. Amazing how this type of article didn't get written during Verano's time in office. Looks like a deliberate attempt by a "Kennedy Democrat" to besmirch the Republican Mayor and Council. Why for two years the Patch was in existence, under the Democratic Mayor, his appointments were never reported? Hmmmmmm. The Patch should stay focused on the great job Mayor Amato, President Byrnes did during the storm from preparing the town, conducting rescues, to the clean up and now the rebuilding stage. Shame on the people who like to spread rumors he was out of town. I personally saw him all over this town being everywhere he needed to be then stopping at the Rec Center to hand out water and ice to residents until dark. We are in good hands. Thank you Mr. Mayor!

You're a kool-aid-guzzling moron. It's clear that your ideology blinds you, and nothing this mayor does, no matter how corrupt he gets, is wrong by you. Extremists like you are what's wrong with our political system.

The good ole boys win again. What about For the people? Not everyone is a Republican! And most of the people appointed already have FAT SALARIES somewhere else, they are double dippers, triple dippers and worse. You would think after the Ritacco mess, our local government would learn a lesson. And would Freeholder Vicari 's daughter get all of these appointments if it werent for Daddy??? That family is at least Quadtruple Dippers times 4 !!!! With all the people out of work, it should be against the law, to give so many jobs over and over and over to the same Republicans. Shame on you, Berkeley Township.

What about the fact that one of the "chiropractors" that was appointed doesn't even have an office in berkeley township. So here we go giving out our tax dollars to someone who doesn't even pay commercial taxes in our town. Apparently being a good ole boy is all you need to be. Disgusting and disgraceful!!!
