State Police Charge Bayville Man in Barnegat Bay Canoe Death

Trevor Murphy, 18, charged with reckless operation of a vessel and failure to report a boat accident, could face additional charges

A Bayville man is facing several charges in connection with a fatal canoe accident on Barnegat Bay last month that left his friend dead, New Jersey State Police said today.

Trevor Murphy, 18, has been charged with reckless operation of a vessel and failure to report a fatal boat accident, Sgt. Julian Castellanos said.

Murphy and his friend Ryan J. Worrall, also 18, took a canoe out into Barnegat Bay in the early morning hours of June 10, after attending a post-high school graduation party. The two men — who had graduated from Central Regional High School only two days before — were dropped off by friends near Worrall's Balsalm Drive home in Bayville.

At some point, the canoe overturned in the darkness and both men went into the water. Murphy was able to swim back to shore. Worrall drowned.

The first notification the State Police Marine Services Division received came late in the afternoon of June 10, when an off-duty State Police officer discovered Worrall's body floating in the bay off Amherst Beach.

The details of the accident cannot be released yet, since Murphy may also face additional criminal charges, Castellanos said.

"There still could be criminal charges pending," he said. "That's to be announced."

Worrall died of accidental drowning, according to an autopsy performed at Community Medical Cener the day after his body was found.

Berkeley Township Police served Murphy with the charges today, which will be handled in municipal court, Castellanos said.

Come on, he didn't even report his friend missing. Even when the body was found, they had no notification of a missing kid. That was a terrible thing to do, I don't care how scared you are.

He didn't even report it ~ if my friend had fallen in the water and possibly drowned I would be calling 911 immediately. No hesitation.

I have written it here before, and each time my comments are removed, please let this serve as a lesson for others, no matter if you think you will get arrested, your friends life is worth more than any ticket or potential jail time, report all accidents, it could save a life! Who knows your being brave enough this time, when you could get in trouble could teach another to have the courage to come forward when it is you in trouble. I am still praying for the family, and will continue, I still pray for the family of the teenager who died (hit and run Twin Lakes Blvd L.E.H. N.J.) when I was a kid.

I certainly hope there was no drinking at the graduation party because there will be trouble for the parents that hosted it.

I am still so saddened by this unecessary death. I keep wondering if emergency help was located immediately after the accident, if Ryan would still be with us today.
So sorry.

'It must have been a LOG'-Di'Gillio

If this young man had a daddy in the mob, 3 $300/hr lawyers he could use this defense...

It has been years and the COWARDS at the NJSP have not had the tennis balls to file a complaint for that man who ran over a boston whaler at FULL SPEED in the middle of the night and KILLED an innocent man.... Then he hid the boad with the hole in it, got 3 lawyers and went to the cops a few days later...

Why has the NJSP forgot about that???

This is a Which Hunt..... NJ Style...

I am tired of this reporter's disregard for the family. Too much disrespect. Even crashed the wake.
