A Lakewood man who was stabbed Saturday in Toms River has died.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the stabbing death of a man identified by multiple sources as Lakewood resident Kevin Copes.

Toms River police were called to Community Medical Center about 1 a.m. after a man was brought to the emergency room by friends for treatment of stab wounds.

The police referred comment on the death to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.

The initial reports indicate the man was stabbed in an apartment complex parking lot by an unknown subject, police said. It was unknown whether the stabbing was related to the shooting at a birthday party that occurred late Friday night.

In that incident, a man was shot during a large birthday party for a 21-year-old man around 11:30 p.m. The victim ran to neighbors for help and was subsequently taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center's trauma unit in Neptune for treatment.

Anyone with information is asked Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-929-2027 or Toms River Police at 732-349-0150.

It amazes me that when I was growing up in the 60's a disagreement turned into a fistfight and it was usually over something stupid. Now you have a petty arguement and they pull out their Glochs and 9 MM's and blow each other away.
In Chicago where gangs are killing each other daily they are not planning their future lives but how they are going to die and what they want said at their funeral.
Are drugs and money that important?

That website is honoring hip hop artists who have legal issues - these kids choosing oppositional defiant path in life as if if is cool....waste of a young life - maybe new ordinance on amt of house guests at house parties?

Yeah, sure -- call the Party Police to count heads at every get-together in TR. (There's probably a fire safety occupancy limit per sq. ft. in the bldg. code.)

I love how judgmental people are. Everyone is bashing and mocking this kids life because he was a rapper or black or didnt live on Todd Rd or Vincenzo Dr. Anyone remember those little white kids up a Newark that ran over that black child? Those kids were born with platinum spoons jammed down their throats yet they were in Newark lookin to get heroin. Bet because those kids lived off of Todd it was ok they killed an innocent black child or i'm sure most of you would refer to him as a future gang banger. Point is none of us were there and a young man is dead for no reason. Whether it was a drug deal gone wrong, over a pair of shoes, a color, a girl, someone stepped on his new jordans, whatever, it was senseless and a cowardly act. The kid was someones friend, cousin, co-worker, brother, uncle, neighbor and most important he was someones son ... Before you make stupid posts think about the situation as if it was your kid because believe me no one is perfect and we all make mistakes
R.I.P. Young man, prayers go out to his family.

Thank you Jval80. These people think they are above anything bad ever happening to them. Of course, when something happens to their kids, it's always someone else's fault.

Give it a break! I did not read anyone here mocking anyone. I did see people putting 2+2 together. Fact is he was busted for drugs, did like rap music & the lifestyle that came with it. As far as being cowardly? Were you there? Well I wasn't either but maybe you can get off your soap box long enough to realize that just maybe this pillar of the community was in the process of hurting someone and the "Coward"- (how you refer to that person anyway) who did the stabbing could have been acting in self defense?

As a family member, I thank you for that post. At the end of the day, a beautiful life was taken. We lost a son, cousin, nephew, uncle, brother, friend. We lost a beautiful life. It amazes me the judgement that people pass with limited knowledge and the direspect shown to a family mourning. Regardless of a person's past, you weren't there and have no idea what happened in that moment. Nothing, i mean nothing warrants any life to be taken. RIP Kevin.

@jval80 If people thought of this before they reach for a weapon this may not happen soo much. Its just sad that people have pride in this type of thinking. I just laugh at these Todd rd getto wanna be s, growning up in Irvington i would love to drop them off in some hood and see how long they wanna be getto.

Here's my issue . I don't care if Gilford Avenue is on the north or south side of Rt 37. One person was shot at a party and another stabbed and died. yet with all these friends in attendence, shouldn't there be atleast 2 suspects arrested by now, sitting in the air conditioned Ocean County Jail?.

Give me a break! Gifford Park over the past several years has been changing for the better. Many run down delapadated homes have been razed with new homes to follow. I am sure this home wasn't owned by the party people and were probably renters. This is the main problem in this area of town, no show landlords who don't care who they rent too. Maybe the town should spend more time on code enforcement which may intice a landlord to sell the property and hopefully it will get cleaned up.

This world would be a better place if ALL have to actually go to work and collect a paycheck everyday. It keeps you out of trouble like this. Sorry, for his famiies loss, but as a parent you had to see him going down the wrong road and did noting about it! Shame on you. The only way to survive is an honest living, not by being in the MOB or selling drugs. Get your BUTT to work!
