UPDATE: Seaside Park, South Seaside Park Access Shut Down For Tuesday; Other Towns Still Waiting

Access plans changing by the minute

UPDATE, 3 p.m. Monday: Tuesday's access to South Seaside Park for Berkeley residents has been canceled, according to a notice posted on the Berkeley Township Police Department's Facebook page at 2:30 p.m.:

"As of now there will be no further entry to South Seaside Park or Pelican Island," the statement reads. "We are working hard with our state agencies, to include the Department of Transportation who control the roadways, to ensure a safe and orderly return in the future. We are are currently assessing the situation but as of now access for tomorrow will NOT occur. Please check back for further updates."

Seaside Park's borough website had the following notice at 3 p.m.: "As of this date, the State of New Jersey has deemed the roads on the Barrier Island unsafe. No access will be granted to Seaside Park Tomorrow. Updates will be posted here as soon as they are available."

Seaside Heights residents are meeting tonight at 7 at the Holiday Inn on Route 37 in Toms River, according to several reports. It is unclear whether Seaside Heights officials will be present, however. The borough's website has the following announcement, dated today: "We truly apologize for any bad information out there, but sadly Seaside Heights remains closed to anyone but essential personnel. We will have a plan by Wednesday (Nov. 7th) night that should allow limited access by this Friday (Nov. 9th). Take care and sorry for all of our losses."

Toms River officials posted the following on the township's website this afternoon: "Mayor Kelaher and Chief Mastronardy attended a meeting this morning with the NJ Department of Transportation, Lavallette, Brick and Seaside Heights authorities.  The DOT has declared that the roadways on the barrier island North of Seaside Heights are unsafe.  They have found over 22 sinkholes, some being as much as 8 feet deep.  The DOT is aggressively attempting to stabilize the situation.  The pending Nor'Easter is of great concern and it is unsure how it may affect their progress.  This situation will directly impact the development of any type of public access to the Island.
Ortley Beach is known as Ground Zero.  This area was affected by the storm more than the neighboring towns."

Lavallette officials released the following statement, according to the Ocean County Police Blotter Facebook page: "It is our understanding that the Borough of Seaside Park and South Seaside Park have started to allow residential access to their property owners. It is imperative that you know that we are working as hard as we can to allow our residents the same access rights.

"You should understand, however, that the damage incurred in those municipalities, and God bless them, is not as extensive as the damage that was incurred to Ortley Beach, Lavallette, the Toms River Beaches and the Brick Beaches. We are dealing with collapsed roadways, down utility poles and wires, in places there are still three to five feet of sand on the roadway surface. We have a number of roads where the asphalt has been completed sheered and has traveled as far as the Barnegat Bay. There are a number of locations along Bay Boulevard where the roadway has eroded and has fallen into the Barnegat Bay. Most all of the homes on the oceanfront from Philadelphia Avenue to the south have been damaged to the point where safe access is just not permittable.

"We ask that you please remain patient. We are working on the plan that will start to allow you safe access to your property, possibly as quickly as tomorrow."

Previously: The Berkeley Township Police Department said South Seaside Park residents will be granted access to their homes Monday and Tuesday to retrieve belongings, subject to specific rules, according to a press release on its Facebook page Sunday evening.

For residents of other barrier island towns -- Lavallette, Toms River, Seaside Heights and Seaside Park -- plans are still being formulated, Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said.

"The damage to the north, in places like Ortley Beach, was more extensive," Mastronardy said, with breaches of the island that did not happen in South Seaside Park.

More information on those areas was expected to be available tomorrow, Mastronardy said. The Berkeley PD statement is as follows:

The State OEM has permitted BTPD to allow our residents over to the barrier island to obtain personal items. The following rules will be strictly enforced. This permission was not granted easily. We need all residents to cooperate.

Rules: South Seaside Park

1. Registration starts at 9 a.m. at Berkeley Township Town Hall (Town Hall is located at 627 Pinewald Keswick Road, about a mile west of Double Trouble State Park and the Garden State Parkway)
2. You will be required to bring proof of residency or rental (i.e. tax bill, utility bill, license with name and address). This will be confirmed with the tax records.
3. You will be issued a permit to get past the road blocks at the bridge. The permit must remain in the vehicle windshield.
4. You must be off the barrier island by 3pm on both days!!!!!
5. This permit is only good for Monday November 5, 2012
9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. and Tuesday November 6, 2012 8 a.m.-3 p.m. NO EXCEPTIONS!
6. Each residence is only permitted one passenger vehicle or pick-up truck. You will be permitted to exit and re-enter to gather your belongs during the designated hours. You will not be permitted to cross the bridge after 3 p.m. It cannot be a box truck or tractor trailer. Small trailers acceptable up to 16 feet.
7. You are restricted to your property ONLY. NOBODY will be permitted to sightsee. We have to ensure the security of our residents. State Police will be patrolling during the stated hours.
8. Your cooperation now will greatly impact any of these types of efforts in the future. We will make accommodations to get you along with your insurance adjustors and contractors to winterize your homes in the future.
9. FEMA representatives stated that they are trying to man a post in Seaside Park Police Department. This is not a definite.

Pelican Island

1. Due to the extent of damage on Pelican Island we need to get the Township Construction Officials to assess and authorize reentry.
2. We are working as fast and diligently as possible to allow our residence access to their homes.
3. Monitor the Berkeley Township Police Facebook along with the Township website. If we get clearance we will post it and allow you, with a permit to access Pelican Island. We understand your frustration. Please be patient!!

NOTE: Patch is trying to get information on Lavallette, Ortley Beach, Seaside Heights and Seaside Park on this situation. This story will be updated as the information becomes available.

Be patient.... Do you realize this is a national disaster??? I am not an emergency worker, I have a homeowner and I have lost everything, but these people who are working for us are doing the best they can in a very very bad situation. So many people are getting angry at the emergency workers and they are doing their best. I saw a picture of route 35 north in Normandy Beach and the highway is crushed into pieces. No way any car could drive on that road. Unfortunately, residents will have to be extremely patient and let our road departments, gas companies, water companies, electric companies and emergency workers put our communities back together so we can enjoy our homes once again... As the bible says... "This too shall pass". ..... Please have some patience and know don't throw stones at those who are working to help you!

Someone needs to look out for the residence of the Seaside area in their time of grief. It seems although safety is a concern something is wrong here, it seems as if someone just wants them out of the way. How are the residence going to recover their losses when they cannot document or prove what is lost. They need a watch dog of some sort . Maybe some group or lawyer to begin to research if what is being done to keep them from their property is legal and if not file with the courts immediately. It seems it is easier for FEMA and OEM to do whatever they want when no one is looking over their shoulder. Although their intentions may be good it does not always work out in the best interest of the individual. In other words there needs to be a way to trust but verify. The way things are being set up now those that are interested in the big picture hold all the cards and there is no one looking out for the individual that will lose in the end.

Nothing about this is illegal. In fact if they had allowed us onto the island people would have died. I live in Seaside Park and they have a "watch dog" the Seaside Park Police Department. They are all from Seaside Park and have so much respect for the residents. The line about how FEMA and OEM can do whatever they want is completely false. They have to go through the government. We have plenty of people "looking out for us in our time of grief" and there are plenty of reasons why the heights is not being opened.

@KH Here, Here !!! I second that. I believe we have to trust and rely on the emergency workers to put our communities back together. Can you imagine the mass caous if everyone was allowed on the island at one time? Everyone must adhere to these rules at this time. It is the best for all of our residences

Heart Broken in Ortley Beach

1:26 pm on Tuesday, November 6, 2012

Heart Broken in Ortley Beach
Yesterday I was sent a link to a YouTube video showing a bus load of Toms River residents taking a tour of Bay Boulevard in Ortley Beach and Lavallette. It appears 2 bus loads were taken in on Sunday afternoon. They weren't residents of the barrier island. They were so detached. It was almost as if they were taking a site seeing tour in Disney World. Why would Toms River do something so thoughtless? The destruction they viewed didn't mean anything to them personally and there comments were shameful. At times they were making jokes. Really Toms River is this the best you can do for us. My concern is when the government does send relief in the way of monetary funds, how much of this will go to the barrier island? Please help me to think better of our municipal government.

Hmmmmm....risk your life or winterize your home~guess that should be your choice...but risking the lives of others to come save you if you fall in a sink hole or something collapses on you, is not your choice. No one WANTS to keep you from your home, but if you missed it, we are in the midst of of natural disaster that is very very real...the people making these decisions are doing it for the safety of EVERYONE, so winterizing your house will need to take a back seat!!! Be grateful you are safe & well you ignorant selfish witch!!!

From what I've seen with my neighbors and experienced personally, the seaside park police are arrogant and rude to residents. Seeing as all they normally do is ride around looking to give tickets to people who pay their salary and their guests for going one mile an hour over the speed limit or breaking some traffic law nobody was aware of, and there seem to be too many for such a small town that literally only has one way out, I'd say they BETTER FINALLY EARN THEIR KEEP AND IF THERE IS ONE, just ONE instance of looting, give them all the boot.

I stand by trust but verify. I am in emergency services and have no doubt that your mayor, chief and officer on the beat wants nothing but the best for their community .I know they have and will put their life on the line for the people they serve; however there will be nameless faces making decisions that will be forced upon them. Take notice almost all emergency services are in one way or another tied to the Department of Homeland Security. Decisions will be taken out of the hands of the locals and made somewhere else unless the locals are prepared to put a stop to it by public outcry and the court system.

Thank you ! I own a house in OB3 for the past 4 years. I was flooded out last year by Irene and still trying to get my house back in order. But my question is where do I belong ? My address has a Lavallette zip code but am I considered part of Lavalette when they are talking about allowing people in to check their houses in Lavallette ? But then again, I no longer belong to Dover Township and am now part of Tom's RIver. So do I follow the instructions for the Tom's River beaches, Lavalette or what? I'm at a loss ! Does anyone have an answer ? Thanks

We all need help. Many of us have homes that we can only occupy in season. What do we do? How far away can someone travel after we've finally been notified that we can come in? People have jobs, can't travel that far on a moments notice.... We are not aware of anything. What we've possibly (very likely) lost. Do we pay taxes this month? Do condo. owners pay fees for maintenance for condo's under water? Insurance? I'm baffled. Also, I don't believe anything I read or am told by any government agency, any police department. And, yes, the police treat the residents much, much worse than they do the perpetraters of wrong doing and the druggies. They're all protected.? God help us all....
How do so many people, who are so far apart from each other, help each other get to the bottom of it all?
If you haven't read any of the internet articles i.e. Interview with Police Chief Boyd, go read it. It reminds me of "The Wreck of The Hesperus" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Read that too, if you haven't already. Shame, what a damned shame it all is. The worst disaster this State has ever seen. I think the "Jersey Shore Kids", MTV, and a few others who made tons of money in the town, also need to do their part to help.
And now, an Impending Nor-Easter for the middle of the week. Hope it goes somewhere out in the Atlantic and stays away.
Not another "Perfect Superstorm", pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze!

Your home on thr barrier peninsula is your summer home? Then stay in your primary residence and thank God you have someplace to call home. If your re not a year-round resident, you don't need to be here. You are clogging the roads, burning gas, and your pissy attitude isn't helping anyone.

Bruce Springstein's Induction to "Hall of Fame Speech" His final words at close of speech...........................
"So let me finish with a Garden State benediction. Rise up my fellow New Jerseyans, for we are all members of a confused but noble race. We, of the state that will never get any respect. We, who bear the coolness of the forever uncool. The chip on our shoulders of those with forever something to prove. And even with this wonderful Hall of Fame, we know that there's another bad Jersey joke coming just around the corner.

But fear not. This is not our curse. It is our blessing. For this is what imbues us with our fighting spirit. That we may salute the world forever with the Jersey state bird, and that the fumes from our great northern industrial area to the ocean breezes of Cape May fill us with the raw hunger, the naked ambition and the desire not just to do our best, but to stick it in your face. Theory of relativity anybody? How about some electric light with your day? Or maybe a spin to the moon and back? And that is why our fellow Americans in the other 49 states know, when the announcer says "and now in this corner, from New Jersey...." they better keep their hands up and their heads down, because when that bell rings, we're coming out swinging.

God Bless the Garden State. "

The lack of communication between our local elected officials and the residents of Seaside Heights in the aftermath of this storm is deplorable...the residents have never been a priority and still aren't. We all know how hard people are working over there and I hope everyone knows how blessed we feel and eternally grateful we are. These are not the people that have made an already devestating event worse for us. Our cheif of police has had no compassion or time for the people he serves. I am a year round resident and homeowner and I feel like he has forgotten, because of the way that town is run, that we are not all living in motel rooms or transients or people who don't contribute to the town. I can only hope that there is ACCOUNTABILITY going forward so that Seaside Heights can become the pristine coastal town it should have always been. God Bless Everyone affected and helping.

We really need to have a group that oversees the rebuilding of SSH and get the state involved. The powers within that are in place are not visionaries. They are happy with 20 somethings urinating in the streets and getting sick on our sidewalks all so their friends that own the local clubs and bars can make sales on beer. WHAT town officials turn their heads the other way to 3/4 of the residents outcry's to shut the bars down early only to EXTEND last call to 4 am.
Kids are walking the streets drunk, cursing and the police turn their heads. They are only interested in fights due to the revenue it brings in.
Heck....when was the lasttime SSH had a DWI----they don't want it because it will disrupt their cash cow.
Bars are blasting music all night long and the police show up and tell the establishments to turn down the music. Ten minutes after the police leave, they turn it up again. It's pathetic
THE PEOPLE OF SSH NEED TO GET TOGETHER NOW and have a say so in the rebuilding of not only the appearance of the town but the codes that govern the city.
Getting a new mayor & council their would be a start
WHILE THE WORLD IS WATCHING... LETS GET OUR TOWN BACK OR WE WILL BE SITTING ON THE SIDELINES WITHOUT A SAY SO

i don't get it??

@jay Gee...not a Bruce fan, but that's fantastic...being born and raised in NJ, I'm so sad when I tell people where I'm from, and then have to defend it...this state has SO much to offer, and if it didn't, others would not be relocating here or jamming up roads to get here in the summer season. We will all be ok...its still a very fresh wound...it takes time to get the bleeding under control, and then the rest can start to heal...to all of you that have homes to go back to, Please be patient...to those that have lost their homes, my thoughts go out to you, and please know that when the initial excitement, and help moves on, please know that my family and I are still here to help.

I couldn't put the entire speech here, but I had heard it in passing at the house I was temporarily at, and they ran that part of the speech. It was great!
The whole speech was, but that's the part they aired because of NJ. Thanks for your kind words, and hope that someday Seaside Will Rise From The Ashes, (or the sand and water covering everything), and AGAIN become THE BEST RESORT TOWN EVER. And hopefully, without corruption and greed.

@Jeffk I was in Seaside Park today. The heights from what I could see from the bridge is getting better. They cannot open it to residents yet because not every street has been cleared off. Think about it, imagine if someone got real hurt from a nail sticking up or a pot hole (which is their biggest issue)? I am not saying allowing reporters and camera crews in is a good idea, I think that is beyond wrong but that is how the Heights operates now. Its all about the media which is sad. They aren't saying you are stupid its just easier to watch and escort a few camera crews than have to escort each individual.

When the reporters go through disaster areas, they are guided and supervised, they are not just left free on their own to wander around.

There is a handful of reporters so they can be accompanied or guided as needed.

Enough damage has been done without the immense risks of letting people wander through am unstable disaster area and into unstable structures

I know this is very hard emotionally, but the sooner they accept it the better.

@BN. You have a problem. We SUMMER owners are residents who pay taxes to Seaside Heights. Who needs you to tell us anything? There would be no Seaside if weren't for us. There are plenty of people who are residents that we have friendships with, and have tried to contact, there are others, who, like the residents lost everything. We couldn't even afford to keep our place almost since right after purchase because of deaths and the like, and financial difficulty, so we have lost everything also in Seaside. We think we did, but we don't know. Yes, grateful to have roof overhead, more than anyone knows we are, and we still do not have heat. Power was restored on Sat. and glad for that, but bit colder now. Lost hundreds in food, and no Insurance. Still we are happy to have what we do have. Wish we were ablet to help others, but don't drive and can't get there, and wouldn't try, as you LIE and say we are out clogging roads and burning gas we don't have the finances even to buy ..... And BN....THE ATTITUDE YOU MENTION, IT'S IN THE LOOKING GLASS YOUR HOLDING. Our home in seaside is the only home we have ever owned, even though we don't live there year round, and I don't know if we'll ever see it again or not. I think that the BN person is very crude, rude, and a rotten dude! :)....or dudeness!........:)

I'm from NYC and have a seasonal home in SSP. I accept that full time residents should get priority when it comes to access, even though I pay the same taxes and do not have the same write-offs as primary homeowners. Nonetheless, I feel we all should get access sometime this week or next and that more then 1 day's notice would be appreciated. Some of us are coming from a long way and have to make arrangements with employers, etc. Maybe even schedule it for next weekend after this second storm is over and we don't have to take off from work.

What scares me is that I will be locked out of my home for 6-8 months if I cannot get there tomorrow.

So sorry for your problems also. Some of the people here, or at least one for sure is making crazy remarks and is an idiot. Or maybe he/she is one of the corrupt residents/employee, or one who doesn't have a clue how, whether we live there or not, we support the town more than the revenue does. Because that revenue is fleeting, just like right now. There is none. It's the taxpayer supporting Seaside Heights, Ortley, and the others. I hope for everyone that there comes a time in the next month when they can have residents come in and check their homes in a safe and guarded situation. Plans need to be made considering how it should be done. I think maybe they could send owners with last names starting with a b c d e between hourse of 9 and 2. Something like that. I wish I were able to go with a task force to help. But, that is highly unlikely. I just feel that the wrong people will take charge. I really do.
Has anyone already paid their taxes for the quarter, and if not, are you planning to?
No one will receive any services for at least 6 months. Since, I guess this is unprecidented in our State, what is the proceedure for this? Does anyone know?

@MOONPOOL your comment above is not okay. This is how rumors start and they need to end. The government is not going to do that because the shores bring in a lot of money. I think saying that they will give you 2 cents and bulldoze your house is such a heartless comment. These are peoples lives this is their reality.

There exists a real possibility that there will be areas that definitely are not rebuilt.

I know it is hard for shore owners to consider but it is possible that some of these structures should not be rebuilt due to the dangers and environmental risks of building on barrier islands.

When it is your house, the pride of ownership overrides everything else, but there are many factors that the authorities have to consider.

I hate to say it but I think for many people it may ultimately 'be over'.

I don't think one can blame the officials - it looks like Mother Nature may have made the decisions for all of us. If certain areas have become unbuildable, there is nothing anyone can do about it.

The Seaside Heights and Park residents should join forces and cross that bridge on foot together, no matter what the local jerks have to say. What are they gonna do shot at all of you? I serious doubt it. Make sure the APP, Patch, CNN and MSNBC, FOX, News Jersey all are available to witness and report this Nazi attack on the citizens.

@GuessWho... Its funny you say this. I was in Seaside Park today and the police really want us there. They want the residents back they want to help us move forward. The issue is the State and the bridge. The state has decided that it is "unsafe" to cross the bridge now which is total bs. I was there today, if it were so "unsafe" they wouldn't have 6 4ton trucks carrying metal and wood back and forth all day. Honestly I love your idea I wish we could make it happen.

@KH.....Have you ever known a public official to tell the truth? First it was announced the bridge may not be safe, then it was announced by the DOT that it was safe then all of a sudden it's not. Sounds too fishy to me. If it was me (I know many affected- I'm on the main land) they would've had to shoot me by now to keep me away from my home. Good Luck!!!!

Please start an association to represent all of you and get legal advice. As an association you can get answers as a group there are power in numbers. As a legally recognized association you are more likely to get you voice heard by the government bodies that will begin to make decision as well as call press conferences to get your word out. As Mr or Mrs Smith you will just be pushed aside and have no voice. To do things like try and force your way across the bridge will only make you look emotional and irrational, you will win public sympathy but not support. If you start a association now while the compassion level is high you may be able to get advice related to you taxes and property at a reduced rate and great press coverage. Once the news cycle changes the residence of the islands will be all but forgotten only to be revisited for a story or two when the boardwalk would normally opening.
Please move fast I have already seen article where more open space is being talked about. That means some of you WILL be losing your property. I’m sure you will get more than 2 cents on the dollar but if you believe you will get anywhere near the value of the property I can sell you the Rte. 35 bridge real cheap. There is no doubt that all the barrier islands will be rebuilt but to who’s benefit?

We have lived thru a catastrophe. Its not just our area, but NY, SI, Conn., LI... ALOTTA folks. I made it to Point on SUnday. You see the pictures but its worse up close. All you see is HUGE equipment moving HUGE mounds of sand, poles, wood, etc. We will recover, but not this week. The Islands definitely aren't safe for folks to be roaming around. With all thats going on we done need injuries or loss of life at this point. Know the workers down there, are working like dogs, many not even from here. I saw emergency vehicles from out of town at the base of the Seaside Bridge since Tuesday morning. Its going to be awhile. Hang in there folks* xo

When your turn comes, we will help you clean up yours. It will make you feel better to do something and it may help someone that REALLY needs it. No time to fight, too busy cleaning up a mess!

Thats such a positive way to look at a terrible situation! We were spared the wrath of Sandy (I don't know how, there is wreckage 1/2 mile in every direction from our home). We have spent a lot of time helping friends clean out their homes, donating items, assisting park clean ups, etc. We have had friends over to shower, eat and sleep. We understand that we were blessed by being spared all but some superficial damage (fence, trees, shed) so with school out, we've tried to pitch in anyway we can....knowing we could have easily been on the receiving end instead of the giving. I love the idea of working together...now and later. If every person helps pitch in, the work load will seem lighter and together everyone will be stronger.

I stay away because I am told to. I do trust what emergency people are doing to help me and I am grateful. I will do whatever it takes to help my community rebuild when the time comes, but I don't think others should shoot off their mouths and tell non-residence people to stay away. After the storm I told my wife at least we will have somewhere to go for now at the shore not knowing that was not going to happen either. I agree it is not a time to fight, but frustration kicks in!

They can setup temporary access via the Mantoloking Bridge for Normandy Beach and Curtis Point residents but they can not fix 22 potholes? They are heading out to their homes this week! Wheres all the help we are suppose to be getting? Sounds like total incompetence of the local government. Call Christie 609-292-6000 and tell him enough is enough!

I watched a video on U tube showing a school bus loaded with "community representatives" touring the bayfront in Ortley Beach and Lavallette. I think the most disturbing parts are how these people didn't know the difference between Ortley and Lavallette. They didn't know what streets they were crossing. They joked about not being able to get "takeout" from Mia's restaurant on Bay Boulevard in Ortley. Although there were lots of ooh's and aah's at the destruction done by the storm, I think a better quality of "representatives" could have been selected. Who do I have to know to get on the next tour bus? Because these people obviously don't represent this community.

I had the (un)fortunate experience of being at the Berkeley municipal building this morning. What an inept bunch...someone (either an employee or elected official...I don't know his name...yet) stood up and yelled that "he was taking time away from his family to be there (ummm...he wanted the job, right?) and that the owners on the "island" should be grateful for "all they are doing" for them. Really? Are they for real? They make last minute announcements and seniors who need assistance have to wait for their children or relatives to get here and end up with no one to help them. Instead of coordinating with Toms River and have a checkpoint on Route 37...you know, actually have a disaster plan in effect..have a mobile unit on Route 37 and check I'd's enroute instead of this mess...oh, and btw, the officer this morning was complaint tht he had to work triple shifts. And did they take contact information so they could get a reverse 911 going for the residents? No. Do they think everyone has internet access? And what is with thia Berkeley website? With the smiling mayor? OMG! Put some information up there...and don't make people go to Berkeley Police "Facebook" page...they need a central site for info...not having to search all over the place. VERY UNORGANIZED! I don't think Berkeley Township even has a DISASTER RECOVERY PLAN. WHAT A JOKE!

Please, everyone, there was an update about meeting of Lavalette residents or all of the area residents. I was changing stations. News states that the people at meeting were all clamoring to get into their homes for needed meds, and whatever, and they're not being let in. Supposedly there were hundreds.
There is a post from @Jeff, stating we should form association and hire an attorney...Not likely. Most of the people at those meetings, probably do not have power, and cannot see these posts. Some or most of us posting are out of the area. What are we going to do? Many of those displaced and with family are too old, and others who are fortunate enough to be employed must go to work. The others must care for small school aged children, who are likely not in school, babies, and, most of the folks in the Seaside Area are likely in financial difficulty. We sure are. We needed to sell. Well, sell, shmell, that's not going to happen!
Is there someone out there who can post free legal advice? We could use information....What are our options? Do we still own our homes? Do we have a right to what's in them? Taxes, Electric (probably isn't any) The gentleman they showed speaking on the news also said that it WILL BE MONTHS before anyone can go back to the island.....Just can't think of what to do. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP US ALL. Mostly those who are directly affected by losing their primary residences. The rest of us too, but those people first.

Also everyone. The Nor'Easter is definately coming, so, no one should expect to be let on the Island now. After I read from the poster that mentioned Ortley as being ground zero, hit worst of all, and 22 sink holes through out the island near I think route 35, wherever that is now, it seems as though there was a tsunami, and we're just stuck. And lucky to be alive, not having been there. If it were in summer, I suppose there would be a super death count. Wonder if there is one?
On act of God, or Nature, probably not going to be insured...Who knows. What if mulitple stories, (condo people) what do they need to know? Well, fellow owners, Ft and PT, dunno what to say anymore, even though I keep talking....DUMPING?? It is too, too frightening. If you pray, please say prayers for everyone involved. Although, I'm not a church goer per say, I had been to mass couple of times at "OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP" as a friend asked me to accompany, I usually would say no, but I went.............THAT'S WHAT WE NEED, PERPETUAL HELP. WONDER HOW THE CHURCH FARED? IT WAS ALWAYS OVERFLOWING IN ATTENDANCE.
If you don't pray, please send positive thoughts to the displaced Island Inhabitants....ALSO, THE RED CROSS AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS COLLECTED OVER 15 MILLION SO FAR. WHO GETS THAT, WHAT DOES IT GO FOR...TO? HOW WILL WE FIND THAT OUT??? ugh................

@Project Bluebeam:
Where are you from? I don't understand. Who was on road all week? There couldn't have been anyone on the road all week. There were no roads open for quite awhile. The governor shut them down. Where would these people go?

Your statements do not make any sense.. Were those people on the roads with jackets and kids only from the areas you mention? Wasn't anyone from Pennsylvania, Staten Island. Or was everyone traveling in the storm to Seaside area from Nutley, North Caldwell, NYC etc.? What jackets were the kids and adults wearing from NYC who are sculking around on the road, "clogging it up". Do you sit by the side of the Parkway, Rt. 35, elsewhere in the vicinity and watch where the traffic goes? What gas problem?. There was no gas for most of the week? Now that was the problem. Guess you've been seeing a mirage...or nightmaring, or you've lost it, but far be it for me to say so. This isn't funny, you know. Or don't you?
Your Statement:
Project Bluebeam

5:50 am on Tuesday, November 6, 2012

Wrong Jay. There ARE people from Northern NJ and NY clogging the roads. Look at the license plates. Look at the stickers on the cars. They bring their kids with their Plainfield, Nutley, and North Caldwell high school jackets on and they've been making the trek all week. That's 1/2 of your gas problem right there.

Leslie Ann,
What town do you pay tou taxes to? Whatever town you pay tour taxes to is whatever you follow. I know people who have a Lavallette zip code and pay taxes to Toms River so they have to follow the requirements of Toms River about when she can go over to get her stuff out of her house and also when she can go and check on the destruction on her house.

Wake up folks. @Jeff is correct.

Lavallette, Seaside Park, etc are soverign boros. Their residents are returning (Lavallette is emailing invitiations to go back via bus on a street by street basis).

Residents of the Dover beaches need to quickly form strong Homeowners Associations so we can get legal standing in the discussions that are happening.

Make no mistake, Toms River will do what is in Tom's River's interests, which will likely be to maximize their tax future revenue with minimum outlay of Toms River cash. They will do this by trying to condemn entire barrier island sections in order to use emminent domain to take all of the properties in one big swipe, then sell it to a developer who agrees to bankroll the repairs needed to make the island "safe".

Wake up folks, being locked out is NOT about your safety.

Let's all get together, otherwise it will all be taken from us.

There is always the ACLU. Their phone number is 212-549-2500. The top article on their web page says "Notice to Media in the Wake of Hurricane Sandy." It does NOT say what they are doing to help - maybe they need a cause. I am not a property owner, but if I were, I would seriously think of getting an attorney, especially if there is a possibility of having your property condemned - scary stuff right there.

God bless all of you. My heart and prayers are with you.

The destruction they viewed didn't mean anything to them personally and their comments were shameful. At times they were making jokes. Really Toms River is this the best you can do for us. My concern is when the government does send relief in the way of monetary funds, how much of this will go to the barrier island? Please help me to think better of our municipal government.

me and my husband saw that youtube video as well and were just speechless as to the "commentary" on the video...I'm glad that they find the damage funny and things to joke about because i don't think any residents do...so they'll bring people who could care less through ortley but the people that it means the world to can't go...and they we're supposed to be township representatives or something? disgraceful....if they can go there than why not start bringing us out by bus whether it's street by street or however...just get something started...we know the risks were facing going into possibly unstable homes...i know my neighbors home made it through with just minor flood damage, i already know my Windows are broken, but as far as I've been informed is structurally fine, so I'd like to board up and get things out before anymore damage is done...it's already too late to protect it from the noreaster...but afterwords...if they can find a way to take site seeing tours for cold careless people they can find a way to get us there too

Seems pretty funny to me that they could fill in almost another entire island to allow access for the Mantoloking residents, but can't fix "almost 22 sink holes, some as deep as 8 ft." in Lavallette and Ortley Beach. By the time we are allowed back in to the houses that didn't get hit on the exterior, our interiors will look like Bin Laden's beard from the mold that will have established itself in them. So, exterior damage or not, our houses will virtually be worthless, too, and will need to be totally knocked down. Something about this picture just doesn't feel right!
