Police, School Superintendent Confirm Child Luring Incident
Attempt happened to second-grader in Mill Creek area
Police and school officials have confirmed that a child luring incident did take place Thursday in the Mill Creek Road area of Bayville.
Berkeley Township Schools Superintendent James D. Roselli sent an e-mail this afternoon informing the district staff that Police Chief Karin T.DiMichele had called him at 12:45 p.m. to confirm the incident.
Two women in a dark blue minivan with black tinted windows attempted to lure a second-grader into the vehicle, Roselli said.
The driver was a white female and there appeared to be a young white female in the back asking 'Would you like to go for a ride?' Roselli said.
The make and model of the minivan are unknown, but it appeared to be of 1990s vintage, he said.
Roselli announced at the Oct. 25 Board of Education meeting that reports of the luring incident had not been substantiated. But he received another call from DiMichele today confirming the incident.
Detective Sgt. James J. Smith said yesterday that no one had reported the incident to police. But that changed today, DiMichele said.
"A person did come forward," she said. "The detective bureau is investigating and interviewing the parties."

Really?? Yesterday, they said it was unconfirmed. It took this long to realize? BTPD dropped the ball big time. Everyone in town and surrounding towns should have been notified. Insane.......

Wow. We heard about the incident and called BTPD and we were told that it was all rumors. I understand that they don't want people to panic, but at the same time, we have young ones to protect and they have a lot of nerve lying when we asked a direct question.

Amazing how quick some are to bash the police department. Apparently english comprehension is a lost art. The article clearly states that as of yesterday it was not reported to the police. That occurred today and the police are conducting their investigation. Perhaps if the event had been reported when it happened, the result would be different.

I'm a neighbor and the police were called and showed up when it happened. Also it was 2 little girls that a man and a woman tried to lure into their blue mini van.They went around the block 3 times and tried to lure them to go for a ride. When my other neighbor came outside the van took off out of our neighborhood. I will be keeping an eye out for the van!

The police don't relinquish every little detail because it gets posted in public forums like this. They will inform the public with enough information so we can protect ourselves and our children, but not too much, that they don't give away investigative information that can compromise catching the dirtbags luring kids. Don't be so quick to judge the police. They do a lot behind the scenes that you don't know and remember an important fact..... they put themselves in harms way every single day to stand between you and bad people. it would behoove you to show some more respect.
Especially when you may be the one calling 911 the next time you or your children are (god forbid) in trouble...

It was reported to the police at 7pm on Monday, it's all in the call records. It's sad that the only way the public was being notified up until now was through Facebook and Twitter.

It is sad that our schools call us for every other thing but the superintendent didnt feel the need to inform us of this with the all call system. Noteven a notice home and I get every other email never saw this one.

Ms. Kelly is not wrong. I also live in the neighborhood and the incident did not occur Thursday. It indeed occurred on Monday and was reported on Monday. Nobody is bashing but the police should be honest. It is bad enough that they originally reported it was unfounded. So "whatstherealproblem" is dishonesty.
