Barnacle Bill's miniature golf course was flooded out and debris from homes up the road settled in it. On the left, a home behind the golf course shifted onto one of the holes.

Ortley Beach homeowners were given their first chance to view property damage sustained during Hurricane Sandy.
Buses transported residents with property between Route 35 North and Route 35 South to the devastated section of Toms River on Wednesday morning.
Residents who still had home--several had floated off their foundations during the storm--found flood damage, mold and debris waiting for them.

I keep looking for the little chapel before the parking lot on Third...no luck. It's a mess. I bet you will be able to fill a lake with tears.

Sadly St. Elizabeth's Chapel is no more. It was a beautiful little church with much history. Hopefully it will be rebuilt but the beauty of all that was inside the church will be missing. Some things have been recovered and by God's grace may there be more to follow. Bless all that worshiped there and we look forward to worshipping there once again.

Poor Barnacle Bills too. That was there almost forever...or at least since the early 80's. So many things gone...so many people hurt.

Yes, but it survived and looks like it can be restored. Our house we rented for at least 20 years is gone. :(

what's the point of this story? A better story is explain why it's safe for northern towns to drive to their homes themselves (through Ortley) but we can't even get to our homes. And when we do it has to be on a bus. Normandy Beach home owners are free to drive right by my house but I can't even check on it and make sure it's not open for whoever wants to help themselves to my stuff.

So sad to see so much damage to Ortley. I have been going to ortley ffor past 65 years way back crossing the bay on the wooden bridge. Many rentals in the past. Now I stay at a campground in jackson near rte 9. My thoughts go out to all the people of the shore area. there is a fund raiser for the Ocean County food bank in Bloomfield on Sat nite. take care and God Bless ALL! Elaine G.

Hubby's cousin lived on 7th Ave in Ortley, 3-4 houses in from the beach/Surf Club. Can't contact her and haven't seen/heard damage on the eastern end of that street. Does anybody know more than we do?
