Pelican Island Residents: Go Now To Get Belongings

Access for Berkeley and Toms River residents of island granted today only; you must be off by 4 p.m.

Residents of Pelican Island -- both those from Berkeley and from Toms River -- have been granted permission to access the island to retrieve belongings, Berkeley Township officials said.

Berkeley Township Attorney Lauren Staiger said the decision, reached this afternoon, grants permission for residents to take one personal vehicle to their homes to collect belongings.

Residents must register at the Bellcrest Plaza on Fischer Boulevard in Toms River and must prove residency there or that they own a business there, Staiger said.

No sightseeing is permitted and all must be off Pelican Island by 4 p.m., Staiger said.

Probably a manpower issue...
they will probably go town by town... therefore allow to seal off certain sections and control the traffic...

Um, because you can get to Pelican Island without going on Route 35 in Seaside or Ortley where all the sand, sinkholes, debris, etc., etc. It's a small, controlled area with water surrounding it and you don't have to worry about people wandering into other areas, because Pelican Island didn't sustain that much structural damage. Should I continue?

they are talkin bout its unsafe cuz of sinkholes and such but yet they are runnin bulldozers and heavy trucks all over the damn place and then they gave people a tour of the damage on a bus tour. they really need to let us get our things even if its street by street something anything!!

What do you mean when you say you can get your belongings? Did these people bring in uhauls, etc... Or are people limited? If limited, what are limitations?

They gave the address of 935 Fischer Boulevard. My guess is that it will be pretty obvious because Bellcrest Plaza isn't that big.

No, this applies only to those Toms River residents who live on Pelican Island. Pelican Island straddles the boundary of Toms River and Berkeley.

@ Bill, they tried that with the evacuation, told people if you stay its at your own risk, no one will come to rescue you, and then what happened alot of people had to be rescued, unfortunately some people have no common sense and cant follow rules that will protect them so as always the rest suffer for the few, my heart aches for the people who want to just go in and get their belongings buts not worth the risk to human life, my son is a seaside park resident so I know how your feeling.

For those of us that can't afford to stay in Toms River at the bridge and wait our turn to get on (we're in Ortley Beach), how do we find out when we can get over? By the time I saw this email and we would leave to get down, we'd be lucky if we had any time at all to get to the house before we'd have to be off. We need to know how to find out as soon as possible when it's our turn. Any assistance would be appreciated.

This doesn't apply to Ortley Beach residents. I was told the decision was made about 12:30 p.m. We got the information out as quickly as we could.

Updates are being posted on the Toms River website which is www.tomsrivertownship.com
This is where the Pelican Island info was posted, and I am sure where new access announcements will be posted as they become applicable.

Thanky you Karen for this info we know you and the patch are reporting as fast as you get the info. The issue is with Berkeley! They have been cruel and just down right illegal keeping us out of our homes. Please tell them to stop jerking us around.

Insanity. Am I mistaken or is this privately owned property we are talking about here? What gives anyone the right to deny ones access to property they own. This is unconstitutional on every level. How am I the only one that sees this? Before anyone crys safety, let me just say there are several ways to take care of that. Signing waivers for one. I don't know but something smells fishy about all this to me. Glad I live on the mainland.

Not fishy. All they need is for house that is unstable to decide to collapse or for someone that is collecting their belongings to start sightseeing and fall in a ditch. We all know signing waivers don't work.

We have a place in Ortley Beach on 8th Ave. between the 35's it appears to have been spared not sure hopw high the water was. My problem is that we need to winterize before the pipes, hotwater, etc. freeze. There are 14 units in our condo assoc. we have a contractor who will come in and do this, hopefully while we are there to get our stuff out. He has no way to show ID I assume he must come over with one of the owners?

Wow these leaders suck !

Only a fool would follow a fool....

Why would any person allow someone else to lead them .......

I have never understood , the problem is that it takes a crisis for me to be proved correct. Guess that's why everyone prefers to kill the messenger. Much easier to go with the herd.

Cant wait to see how much we are awarded from the lawsuit that is in the works. Just feel bad because these leaders will not have to pay a dime and the taxpayers will be on the hook for it.

I can't believe we are given notice at 1:00 that we have access to Pelican Island up till 4:00 today. What kind of advance notice is this. My parents who own their primary house on Pelican Island are staying we me (daughter) over an hour away. If this note was posted this morning or last night, I would have been able to get there. My parents are stranded at my place and in need of their clothes, meds, etc. This communication is horrible. When will we be able to have access again this week?!!!

When are they going to let those of us who live over in Chadwick Beach over to see when we could get thing out of our homes along with seeing what is left of our homes? All we seem to hear about is either Ortley Beach and Seaside Park and the Heights and we seem to be the forgotten ones. Well. Mayor what about us? We pay our taxes to Toms River also!!!

The roadways are not stable. There are sink holes and road hazards all over ortley beach.everyone needs to calm down and wait till the stabilize the roads
What everyone will want to do is figure out how they are going to remore the watetlogged carpets and furniture and then air out their homes. This is going to be along process. Dont get sucked into the paranoia going aroumd

Once the roads are stabilized we should be allowed on island to assess damages and make our own plans according to our homes damage. Some homes unfortunately are totaled some or all need extensive repairs. Be prepared the water damage is servere.

With all the dumb questions and statements I just read on this article I think the barrier islands should let everyone complaining on at once and see what happens. They make these rules for your safety so no one that has half a brain has to go risk their lives trying to save idiots that wouldn't listen.

Do any of you have a contract with a heating and cooling company? A guest from Seaside Park who is staying with me had made arrangements with them to go over to her house and winterize, etc. as soon as they are able.

Why isn't anyone speaking up for the Dover Township crowd?

Unfortunately most of the "Dover Township Croud" (which I also like to be called rather then "Toms River") does not vote. We are just a cash cow for Toms River.I would like nothing better then to see all the good people of "The Barrier Island" that are currently under the reign of Toms River be able to form our own town and say "Good Bye" to the dairy farmers on the main land.

Tom, it's one thing to express your disdain for the local government, but making condescending remarks about "mainlanders" is uncalled for. Many of us are hosting and feeding barrier island evacuees.

My comment is for year round residents, owners and taxpayers of the barrier islands only. Not the sanctimonious pompous people who have not experienced being barred from their homes and could never understand our situation until they live it down the last detail. I have contacted a lawyer from Red Bank and am emailing him a chronological detailed history of the series of events since the storm. From that he is going to determine if a class action lawsuit can be filed. If the answer is yes he is willing to take it on. At that point we would need at least 3000 people joining us. If anyone would like to join our fight please email Nick at nickdetoronto@rocketmail.com
