Officials Remove Sick Puppies from Brick Pet Store

39 puppies transported to veterinary hospitals, animal shelters

A total of 39 puppies were removed from a Brick pet store after an anonymous tip led to a multi-agency response Thursday.

Officials from the Ocean County Health Department along with volunteers from the Jersey Shore Animal Shelter removed 39 dogs from Puppies Galore, a puppy store located in the Brick Mall shopping plaza at the corner of Brick Boulevard and Hooper Avenue.

Brick Police kept watch over the scene.

"The concern was the overall welfare of the 39 puppies that were here," said Dr. Adam Christman, a veterinarian from Brick Town Veterinary Hospital.

Christman was called to the scene after the county health department contacted the Jersey Shore Animal Center Thursday afternoon. Of the 39 puppies at the store, 26 were determined to have health problems, including four with serious health issues.

The four with the most serious health issues, which Christman said appeared to be pneumonia, were taken immediately to NorthStar VETS in Robbinsville, a 24 hour veterinary emergency trauma center.

The other sick puppies, which varied in size and breed, will be treated at local animal hospitals and shelters, including St. Hubert's in Madison, the Monmouth County SPCA in Eatontown and the Jersey Shore Animal Center in Brick. Those puppies were determined by Christman and another veterinarian on scene to be suffering from mild to moderate respiratory issues, gastrointestinal problems and intestinal parasites.

"Things that will be deemed treatable," he said.

"Our mission right now is just to take care of the welfare of the animals," Christman said. "They're going to be divided up and, at least, have their care provided for until the legal process has transpired."

Ryan Griffin, Senior Public Health Investigator for the Ocean County Health Department, said the store was issued an unsatisfactory notice Tuesday, and agreed to voluntarily shut down. But a tip from an individual prompted the response Thursday. The tip, according to Christman, included a report that one dog had escaped from its pen and was running around the store.

"The township was in the process of reviewing continued licensure," Griffin said.

Griffin said an investigation is ongoing, and animal cruelty officers will be making a determination as to whether any charges will be filed against the owners of the pet store, identified by a county representative on scene as Maria Desantis and Nat Sladkin.

Christman said Desantis was "belligerent" toward officials who came to the store to investigate the complaint.

Neither owner remained on scene, though Christman said he knew of multiple "unfit for purchase" letters filed by local veterinarians against the store, which entitle purchasers of sick puppies to receive refunds and recoup expenses.

Neither Desantis nor Sladkin could be immediately reached for comment.

A check of public records showed Desantis registered the business with the Ocean County Clerk's office last July.

Look at the monstrosity they allowed to go up in Brick Plaza that huge, ugly, orange box that totally took away from the little bit of Americana one could get from Brick Plaza. It is a disgrace and should be torn down. HUGE UGLY ORANGE BOX!!!! I am happy that a whistle blower helped these poor animals in distress.

This town has a shelter full of unwanted animals why would you allow another store of this nature open?

I hope this is the wake up call for everyone...Do not purchase your pup from any retailer...Work with a reputable shelter or if you must, a reputable recommended breeder. With the influx of dogs coming up from overcrowded shelters in the south, be sure any dog you adopt is vetted and beware of scammers trying to make money on the backs of homeless animals.

About a month or two ago, I walked past this store when I went Chickentown. My kids and I were waiting for our food, so they asked if they could see the puppies. I know better than to buy a puppy from a store. The door was locked (even though it was normal operating hours) and there were three people in there giving us a dirty looks for attempting to go in. Not once did they wave and say "not open" They just stared. I saw one man feeding them, but he was very cold to them. I thought they behaved oddly for a new business. Overall, I just had a bad feeling about the place. I am sad to read that these poor puppies are ill.

Nat Sladkin - There were over 5,000 complaints against him in Point Beach 20 years ago and they didn't close him down. He didn't stop. He also happened to be president of the, I believe, Chamber of Commerce in the Beach at the time. From what I have heard The Pet Store on Route 70 is also a puppy mill selling dogs of questionable health. That would be a good story to look into.

I went in there just last monday, also killing time. Definitely recognized that mean old man, and the younger guy with an extremely distinctive face. (if you saw him, you know exactly what I'm talking about). I asked if i could see or touch a puppy, and his response was "why?, you gonna buy one?" Not nice, very creepy. The only dog i was allowed to touch was so skinny i could hardly hold back my tears. Every other dog was lying down or sleeping. I've been haunted since, i'm glam someone else had the courage to follow their instinct. First thing i said when i got in my car was that that was the horrible guy from point beach.

When I was a little girl, my mom and dad bought me a dog for Christmas. The lady sold the puppies from her home in Long Island, and my parents paid $75. - a lot of money in 1964. The dog had distempter - the old word for the illness dogs in puppy mills have., I get viruses from people I am around. Not saying breaders have good intentions or not....just saying some viruses are unavoidable. By they way, Frisky was my first puppy, and his death was very sad. But, did the breader cause it? Hell no.

The sad thing is that these puppies are already born and in the stores for people to buy. When no one buys them....what is their fate? It is a vicious cycle. Everyone says to adopt, but some of these rescue groups and shelters give people a very hard time when they want to adopt. I can understand them being careful, but they have to lighten up a bit and allow more people to adopt from them.

No Name, you are absolutely right... shelter and rescue adoption is made more difficult than it should be. They claim they are trying to avoid giving dogs and cats to people who will not be "good pet owners" and thereby seeing the pet end up in bad circumstances again. Well, truth be told, there's no way to prevent that 100% unless you are a mind reader, and the world is Perfect.

I adopted a dog from them. No problem. They did a vet check and saw that I take my animals to the vet once a year for checkups, not only when they are sick; they are up to date on shots, and that they were neutered/spayed. They asked me to bring my existing dog in to make sure they got along, as well as my kids. They just want to do right by their animals.

@lablover Consider yourself one of the few lucky ones who they allowed to adopt from there. I was refused because my elderly dog wasn't neutered. First: my dog was too old to do this surgery on. Second: They started yelling at me accusing me of being a unfit animal owner because I didn't have my male dog neutered. My male never impregnanted any dog. These people at Jersey Shore are CRAZY. Go elsewhere to adopt don't put yourself through their craziness and selfish motives.

The shelters need to charge less money to families wishing to adopt a family pet, too. If the dogs were turned over, given away or otherwise found their way to a shelter, why do they cost so much to adopt?

Fact: Pets are an expense. Sadly, love is not enough for them...they need regular vet care, a good diet, etc. If people cannot afford the cost to adopt a pet, they have no business owning them. So many pets are let loose or dropped of at a shelter when they need medical attention and their owners dont want to pay. Unfair to the animal.

Tweetiexx- I agree with you about the Animal Shelter in Brick. I had dogs & cats all my life & always kept up with their shots. However, I didn't take them in for well visits every year. Well, after my cat died at 15 yrs. old, I wanted another. I think adopting a child would have been easier. Because I didn't have yearly vet visits for any of my animals, I was rejected. Are ya kidding me? All my cats were inside cats & all my dogs died of old age. I was also 50 yrs. old with no kids.

Who do you think pays for the vet. care, grooming, food and anything else required for these dogs? I will give a few seconds to think about that one.
The money charged for these adoptions BARELY covers the surgery for spay/neuter, vaccinations and any other health issue that may be present. Add in grooming, leash, collar, food, etc. and you are suddenly "in the hole" for money. So please don't wonder anymore why it is so expensive.

I adopted a dog from jersey shore animal shelter and I loved and cared for her for 14 years. I also made regular donations of dog food, blankets and cash. When my dog passed away I returned there with the intention of adopting another dog. The staff was so incredible rude that I ended up walking out. The treat you like a criminal while you fill out their applications I have never donated another thing to them. I now send donations to popcorn park zoo.

We drove by this shopping center and saw the new store. My 11-year-old son asked me if that is a "sick puppy" store. I guess the answer is yes. Just like the other one we have in town. To John Doe: I noticed too that it is expensive to adopt a dog . . . but it is more expensive to buy one and have it fixed and all the shots. The shelter is just trying to recoup that cost.

Do you honestly think they would have done anything. I never stepped foot in the place, the door was locked. If I went in there and saw anything that could have proved my feelings about those people, I would have called. I've called in the past for animal abuse (by neighbors).

Hi John , It costs so much because we have to pay for food , shelter, medical costs and clothing for these dogs . Some are adopted quickly and others can take years . The shelter I help out is run by Volunteers and we spent a lot of our own money on extra food , treats and toys for these dogs . We don't ,make any money we actually lose a lot of money and have to do fund raises to get by. Igo to walk my shelter dogs 3 to 4 times a week and take my own treats and toys . I do this for the love I feel and get back from these dogs

I agree with Karen, BUT ADD THIS COMMENT, If you cant afford to adopt a dog, you cant afford to take care of it !!! PERIOD. My wife and I have 12 cats, well fed, vetted when they are sick. They get 16 different flavor can foods and 6 different flavor dry foods that are available to them 24/7. They even have a water bowl in the shape of a toilet LOL, and they love drinking out of it !!!

To resident, my comment has NOTHING to do with the town, or shutting the place down, it was in response to John asking why it costs too much to adopt and Karen responding about the cost of running a shelter. When PAWS had a shelter, I brought the cats there, turkey for Thanksgiving and Christmas, like Karen also said, it is for the love of the animals and the desire to give them a second chance at a real home life with a loving family. Finally EVERY ONE of my cats came from a shelter or rescue group, 3 of which were feral when I got them. Most shelters will put a feral cat down because they do not have the time to work with them. Now they are get loving pets that want attention.PERIOD !!!!!!!

Stores like this need to be shut down permanently. And to the reader above- it is the breeder's responsibility to assure that the pups are healthy. Anything less is reprehensible.

I'm never one to get in the way of someone trying to make a living, legally... but these 2 stores need to go. Dogs may still be considered property according to the law, but they are living breathing creatures who deserve so much better then the mills these puppies come from. One of my dogs is from a rescue group and the other from a neighbor who had to get rid of him because of allergies. I will NEVER buy a dog from a store, they're not a pair of shoes! I just want to know how Brick could have given him permission to do this again, and if they say they don't know anything about that then they did not do their homework. I was in there about a month ago, and recognized him and when I said to him that you use to own that place in Point Beach, the lady there said to me " Oh you remember him by his voice", I did not answer I just left. He was horrible then and still is horrible. When I went into that store NOT one person, ever said hello, can I help you NOTHING. So when I left I told my husband then that they won't be here for long. And thank god they wont be there. I hope they give him fines, and a long jail sentence. Lets see how he likes being caged.

I took a kitten from an animal shelter ( local ) several years ago. Within a week it died and my healthy cat contracted the virus and also died. I hate puppy mills, but the fact is that adopting from a shelter is not going to insure that your dog or cat will be healthy or safe to bring home, either. I don't fault someone for wanting to purchase a particular breed, as long as they go to a reputable breeder.

The Ocean County shelter in Jackson adopts out of Petsmart in Lakewood on Route 70. I got 3 of my cats there, 2 were small kittens and the third had been hit by a car and might later in life need some extra care. Every PetSmart and now Petco's have adoptions. You can also find pets at petfinders.com. Do you want to help out local pet rescue/shelters, go to http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com and first click on donate food, it is no cost, sponsors pick up the tab, then vote for your favorite organization, AGAIN, NO COST. They also have a storefront that you buy all kinds of neat stuff and everything you buy, gives bowls of food to shelters. This is not a scam, I have been doing it for years. People also put up their rescue stories and some are very touching.

I'm really sick of reading comments that try to blame everything on local government. Let's all just get angry on the criminal that owns this store, and do what we can to support stronger animal protection laws.

The shelters that are very careful about screening are being responsible and are taking care of the animals. They make sure you take the proper care of any pets that you have, and that they match you with the right kind of dog for your family. If you think that is making you jump through hoops, then maybe you just aren't ready to take care of a pet. I love animals and have a cat and dog that were both adopted from shelters. They asked a lot of questions, checked with my vet, and I payed a fee for adopting. I had the animals spayed or neutered if needed. I don't think that was too hard considering the great pets that are now part of my family.

I thought Brick passed an ordinance several years back about allowing people to open these types of shops. Seems to me it was right after the one opened up by Target.

These "stores" should not be allowed to operate. Now I have to put in a but, if the shelters didnt turn away so many people when they looked to adopt, maybe it would cut the numbers of these stores. There are alot of seniors out there who would love to get a companion but are turned down because they receive social security and are considered on a "fixed" income. The shelters tell them they cant "afford" to love a dog.

I do know when ever the lease is up, they will not be allowed to renew it. "Adult" book stores, are the same as drugs and are not allowed to be within 1000 feet of a school. I know that was the argument the town used in court.

All measures, should be taken to ensure that the INHUMANE treatment of animals STOP. Perhaps it is time to legaly unclassify animals as "property" and find a manner inwhich we can safeguard and protect them.

Every individual should be outraged at the continual mistreatment and blatant disregard for these defensless animals.

I have an healthy 11 year old german shpard that I hve had since she was a puppy so I think I'm ready to own a pet . We went to adopt another shepard puppy from the brick shelter and they told us that because we have a child under 5 that we couldn't adopt a dog now someone tell me what that has to do with taking care of a dog. Then we told the shelter that my child turned 5 in a month can we come back then to adopt the puppy then if it was still there and they still said no with no reason why.

To try and shed some light.....first of all I applaud you for wanting to adopt. Sadly, you are being judged by other peoples past mistakes. I have helped out at shelters and they have this rule for the safety of the puppy. Puppy bones are delicate and toddlers are usually anything but. I have seen people surrender thier puppies because their children were putting them the freezer...and one came in with a broken leg..the 3 yr old threw it down the stairs. The owners didnt want to pay the vet bill, so they surrendered the puppy and the shelter incurs the medical bills. Not to say that your child would ever do this but its so hard to convey that shelters have seen the worst of the worst..all done by the human hand. And sadly some good people have to suffer for others wrongdoing which I know seems unfair. The only thing I can say is that the shelters really do have the pets best interest at heart. Also, there are many shleters and rescue groups on this area that may have some different rules so hopefully you wont give up on your thoughts for adoption.

Why did Brick Planning Board allow puppy stores to open? Are they crazy? Do they just hand out licences to anyone? It never turns out good in the end for these poor animals. There are enough at the shelters to adopt. Maybe the Board of Health should have surprise visits to these places. I hope they are not allowed to open again. Thanks goes out to the person(s) who called it in.......and shame on you who knew something wasn't right and did not call it in. As a township, we need to get more involved and not turn our heads away and ignore situations.

Doreen -- Not to single you out, but why are you so sure this business ever appeared before the planning board? Generally, the board approves new construction projects. If a business moves into an existing building, it is rare that the planning board (or zoning board) would get involved.

Dan, that is exactly why the town should require a merchantile license ( I did inquire about this and I was told there was no business license required by the town) for every business in town, not just ones that sell liquor or cigs. If the town required every business to obtain a license it would serve 2 fold. 1 it would be a source of recurring income, and 2 it would keep businesses like this opening at all in the town.

The guy Nat Sladkin, used to own the Puppy mill in Point Pleasant till I got them shut down, then he opened up in Sea Girt on route 35, then in Ocean twshp.
Now they have the nerve to let him open up in Brick? I already sued him and won.
What will it take to shut these monsters down. My dog already is over $10.000 dollars in vet bills, and needs another surgery, I can not afford. Thank you Brick board, for allowing him to open again to rip off more people.

.The word needs to get out..DO NOT BUY FROM A PET STORE..all the dogs are from Puppy mills..If you love to read..Go to your local library and check out the book call.."A RARE BREED OF LOVE" a true story of a puppy mill dog..It will bring you into the world of Baby..His world, and will bring you to tears..I couldn't get passed the first few pages with out crying. To look at this sweet, affectionate little white poodle now, you would never know that for the first nine years of her life, she was living a nightmare of systematic, legalized abuse, with no knowledge that clean beds, good food, kind words, gentle touch and Friends even existed.

Once known simply as number 94 (when anyone cared to identify her at all) -- Baby Kohl, Puppy Mill Survivor, is now one of the most famous dogs in the country! Currently about 14 years old, she is touring the United States throughout the summer and fall of 2008 to help educate people about the horrors of puppy mills through public appearances and A Rare Breed of Love, the book she wrote with her human companion, Jana Kohl. (To read more about A Rare Breed of Love: The True Story of Baby and the Mission She Inspired to Help Dogs Everywhere.) Baby's new Friends include dignitaries, celebrities -- and everyday people like dedicated Wisconsin Puppy Mill Project volunteer Debbie, who, below, shares her thoughts on Baby, Jana, the book, and the urgent need to educate EVERYBODY about the horrors of puppy mills. It's a heartwarming story..

The headquarters for these "puppie mills" are just over the boarder in Pennsylvania's Amish country. WE regard these people as good family people but they probably are the best bussiness people in America. They are the producers of these sick animals and sell them just like one would sell a horse or a pumpkin, no guarantee, just give them the $$$$. I love to visit their area because I see how they keep their property in good condition but $$$$ is their goal, make book on it. If one wants a dog or pet, get advise from a vet or go to a shelter. AKC is your best bet because you receive papers on litter births etc. No Amish, One should see how they raise small calves for VEAL. We never have consumed VEAL since our Minister told us how they were chained down for their short life. NO AMISH, NO DOGS, NO VEAL.

I have heard from a rescue volunteer that when the animal rescues go to pick up animals from the Amish, the Amish put them down before they can be picked up. They treat animals as a business and nothing else. Have no use for them

How come my blog has a delete on it? Is there somebody out there who likes what the Amish do with the dogs? Most do not like to hear this but they must get their heads out of the sand and realize that things like this are happening all the time and we should protest to the fullest. Did you know that Amish don't have a phone in their dwelling? Of course not, its in a small shed at the rear of the house. They'll get you every time. They don't use electricity but go to a commercial freezer for the storage of their meat. A lot more but think of what I wrote, save the dogs, protest real loud.

Thanks for posting that link, Paul. Very informative and underlines a serious problem with the people who granted this person a license to operate a business in Brick.

If the store remains closed, at least that problem is solved and our town is no longer party to that abuse.
There is another store though - as has been pointed out - in the strip mall next to Target. It also needs to close.

That information is outdated, from 2006, and many of those officials named are gone and the phone numbers are no longer working. I think the Ocean County Health Dept is the place to report sick animals, as well as the NJ-SPCA. You can also visit Pet Watch NJ for some info on puppy mills and pet shops. They might be able to refer you to offices and people who can help. Their website is www.pwnj.org

tweetie you are correct about Jersey Shore. When my father in law passed away, we took my mother in law there to find her someone to keep her company. AFTER filling out all the paper work, they refused to show her any animals because she was on social security and could not afford to love a pet.

So I went on Craigs list and found some one who had free kittens, went to look at them and my mother in law took 2 of them home with her. She has had them for almost 3 years now, they are happy and healthy. And some poor cat was left to live its life in a cage because she wasnt "rich enough" to love a pet.

Here is an interesting article about the problem with shelter adoptions for anyone interested. It addresses all the things that have been mentioned here so far, I think.

http://www.slate.com/articles/life/heavy_petting/2012/01/animal_rescue_want_to_adopt_a_dog_or_cat_prepare_for_an_inquisition_.html

I also went to Jersey Shore once and inquired about what would be required to adopt a dog and was basically told that I wouldn't qualify and not to bother because I didn't take my dogs to the vet as often as they thought I should - and then also because one of my children was 6 at the time - too young to have a dog, they said.
I've had dogs my whole life. I always had one growing up and have had a dog of my own for the last 13 years I've been married and had children. One of them recently died of old age and the other one is currently 11, and healthy as she could be.
I recently got a new puppy to replace the one that died and he came from a puppy mill. My wife bought him, and wasn't really aware of the problem with puppy mills.
I feel good about the fact that he was spared that life by coming to our home - but at the same time, I know that buying him only makes their business profitable and encourages them to continue. I would have preferred to adopt . . .
In any event, the puppy is happy and healthy and my young sons best friend. And a shelter dog will be put down instead as a result of their determination that I am not a fit pet owner. Shame.

I've discussed their policies with the Brick Mayors office and I was told they get many complaints about them and there was nothing they can do because they are a seperate entity independent from Brick. No taxpayer money goes there. When they turned me away, I stopped donating to them. Further insult to injury for these poor puppies.

Now is the time for community spirit, not political theater . . . Our State and local elected officials need to work together to protect these defensless, powerless animals which are so cruely housed in BRICKTOWNSHIP.

"Griffin said an investigation is ongoing, and animal cruelty officers will be making a determination as to whether any charges will be filed against the owners of the pet store, identified by a county representative on scene as Maria Desantis and Nat Sladkin." The fact is certain, that our State, County, and Municipal elected officials need to act now!

She just turned 4 in October and has been perfectly healthy since we got her, except for being a little nervous, which I understand is normal for some Dobermans. The sad thing is that before we bought this dog, we tried to adopt one fom an out of town shelter and were denied. We love our dog to pieces, but knowing about the puppy mills, I wouldn't purchase another from a puppy store. So glad someone reported the abuse of these poor defenseless animals!

I find it funny when people start trying to say nasty things about the local shelters in this area for the following reasons:
-Shelters prices are too expensive... Really? But its absolutely fine to be spending well over $1000 on puppies that are from bad breeding lines and are bred in puppy mills. Most shelters are NON PROFIT; this means that they do not get any funding from the state. Donations are where they get 90% of their funding. The shelters need to re-coop the cost of: Spaying/neutering, microchipping (and registering said chip), giving vaccines, de-worming, heartworm/feline aids/leukemia testing, feeding them and keeping them in the facility... Normal adoption costs are under $300, the average cost of a spay surgery for a medium size dog is around $200... DO THE MATH.
-They won't let me adopt a puppy becasue I have a young child... Maybe because they are concerned for the overall welfare of YOUR child AND the puppy you are interested in. Nothing against young children, but, most of them do not realize that the new cute puppy is not their favorite stuffed toy. Because of this, they may poke, prod, or tug on the puppy, Puppies do not have the proper social skills yet to know that biting the child is not what they should be doing. When they puppy bites the child, the owners freak out and what happens? They give away the puppy, or BRING IT TO THE SHELTER. Saftey first people!

To be continued.

@Ruth, your totally way off. Jersey Shore Animal Center are run by a bunch of arrogant people who would rather not adopt then to allow a good family to adopt. As you see by the numerous posts from people who have been given a hard time over NON ISSUES. I'm sure none of these people are making this up. If people wish to adopt, save yourself the aggravation and go to another shelter. AVOID these wack-a-do's at all costs. I'm guessing by your arrogant dribble you work there.

BW

5:15 pm on Monday, January 30, 2012

Sorry Ruth but your logic is off. When I was growing up we had dogs all the time. 5 kids 2 or 3 dogs never a problem. It has become almost impossible to adopt from a shelter. We we were kids, if one of our dogs passed away, dad would go to the shelter, pick out a puppy or dog pay 20 dollars and the whole process took 30 minutes top. Now you go to a shelter you cant even LOOK atthe animals until you fill out a 6 page application, are interogated as to why you want to adopt and have at least 10 years of vet records for your last pet. I realize they want to prevent abuse, but it is easier to find a 100k a year job as a janitor then it is to adopt a pet.

I agree Me. I'm all for applications to fill out before anyone can adopt a pet but unless there's sufficient knowledge that a household wouldn't be a good home for a dog or cat, let them adopt already. Having children or being a Senior or someone single isn't a good reason to reject them..Do you really think a home with a Senior or kids is worse then living in a shelter everyday? Please.... these shelters have to use common sense.

Lisa Begin-Kruysman

5:35 pm on Monday, January 30, 2012

My research and writing tells a story of very different sheltering experiences in various regions of the nation...all shelters are not created equally. There are enough shelters that you can work with, however. Most of my friends have had good experiences with Petfinder.org. I had a friend obtain a dog from a Monmouth Co Shelter, he took it home that night, no questions asked from an adoption event at a Blue Claws game. It had a very sad end and it was clear this shelter knew the dog was dangerous. Reach out to Rescue Groups too, but remember, there are a lot of scammers out there. Ask for references and talk to a lot of people.

Lablover is in the right here. Everyone should remember what this article was actually about, the officals in Brick and surrounding counties who stepped up and helped those animals when it was most needed, that's what truly matters. Even if people here don't agree with how some places are run, we can all agree that we want what is best for the babies that were removed from this store.

I did not say I worked at any shelter/rescue group/pound/agency, whatever. I am not personally involved with the Brick shelter, or any shelter for that matter. A person doesn't have to work at any agecy to have the right to defend them if they belive in what they do. To any one on here that was denied, I don't think that should stop you from trying to rescue a dog or cat, or any other animal from a shelter or rescue. As Lisa said, all shelters are not created equal. Some places are easier to adopt from than others. I'm not trying to start fights, I just think that unless you work for or volunteer for a place like this you really can't totally judge them on whatever policys they have set in place.
Getting angry and bad mouthing this shelter, or that shelter or this person or that person doesn't do good to anyone. I apologize if I offended anyone who read my post, because that certainly was not what I was trying to do.

@Dianne

You are so WRONG. The only $ Jersey Shore Animal Center gets from Brick is what they charge Brick for any services. As per the Mayors office. So guessing doesn't get you anywhere. If anyone wishes to adopt. DON'T go to Jersey Shore Animal Center. They are heartless fanatics who turn away perfectly good people for no rational reason. It's irresponsible POSTERS who do nothing to help the situation but steer people in the wrong direction. I guess all the other posters writing about their unfortunate experiences with these nuts are ALL wrong.

If you haven't dealt with JSAS, you can't know how rude & fanatically crazy these people are. The thrift store is highly priced & some things you can buy cheaper new. Even Dollar Store things are sold for more then a dollar. It's all donated free things, so why don't they just try to make any kind of profit. That's just shows how crazy they are.

You might want to mention that Breeder's Association of America on Route 70 should be the next to go. THANKS. (Your comments WILL matter).

While I haven't adopted a pet from JSAC, they could not have been more appreciative of the 15 quilts and sheets and towels I donated to them on behalf of Covers for Critters. They said they wer down to just three blankets at the time. I have informed JSAC that I know of a group that will contribute to the vetting of the pups from Puppy Galore and help to place them in good homes. Yes, please let the mayor how you feel about this establishment and the other by Target. I will do so too. Thank you, Lisa, for supporting my request that people take ONE MINUTE out of their day to e-mail the mayor of Brick and tell him that Brick Twp. does not want Puppies Galore to reopen. Does everyone have ONE MINUTE? The breeder dogs have hours and hours to spend...cramped in their cages breeding puppies for Puppies Galore and Breeder's Association of America, Brick, NJ. Wouldn't it be nice to know that this would be one or two more stores who won't be buying their puppies?

PLEASE NOTIFY THE MAYOR OF YOUR THOUGHTS BEFORE THE HEARING ON 2/14/12. Thanks.

In the meantime, please contact the Brick mayor and IMPORTANT - please have all of your friends and their friends do the same. The sooner the better and certainly before 2/14. We will be demonstrating this Sat. at 12 noon at Breeder's Association of America in the strip mall next to Target on Route 70 in Brick. (They are "next" to go). If you can join us (even for 30 min.), I guarantee we will be able to speak to people and ask them to join us by contacting the mayor to prevent Puppies Galore from re-opening. This what we HAVE to do. If we don't put pressure on the town, we will end up with this store opening again. They can elect to have his license removed even if the Board of Health recommended otherwise.

I myself would like to see these 2 serve prison time, since this is not the first, nor will it be last if we cant stop them, they have been shut down by the a town. Someone should contact Wall (sea Girt) and find out if the town did bring any charges or just forced them to close.

I think the NJ SPCA assisted in the evaluation and removal of puppies as did the Dept. of Health and Sr. Services with the Ocean Co. Board of Health (which is the board of health for Brick as they don't have their own). I am not sure if it is the Monmouth County SPCA was involved since this is Ocean. Some local veterinarians went out to examine the dogs and they determined that many of the dogs were severely ill some not as bad as others. If the system works, this will be the LAST STRAW for Nat Sladkin and Maria DeSantis. For years BOTH of them have sold sub-par puppies from the Amish in PA and other puppy mills. DeSantis ran an unlicensed kennel in Monroe Twp.until she was ordered to cease and desist operations. She then opened Puppy Boutique. When that closed down, she must have joined the other scum of the earth, Nat Sladkin. (What a perfect pair). Pray that justice is done. For every poor puppy in their store, there are two parents back at a mass commercial breeding facility (a puppy farm) living in squalor conditions and being forced to continually breed puppies. WOULD YOU TREAT YOUR PET THIS WAY? Then why do people feel it is okay to support this industry and buy puppies from pet stores? The USDA and the Animal Welfare Act only provide minimal protection. To them dogs are "property". To the puppy farmers they are a cash crop. WAKE UP people. Learn where these puppies come from. Don't support this ABUSE.

Gladly. We provide the pre-worded signs. You don't have to bring anything. We stand with our signs in our designated area. It is awesome. People right by and beep their approvals; give us a thumbs up and stop by to talk to us about the subject matter.
Potential purchasers either stop at our table and leave without going into the store OR they just don't care and they shop anyway.
This is perfectly legal. We have the approval of the town and the police dept. We do not harrass but we do get our pamphlets out to people The more people that learn about this business, the less business the pet stores will have - I am convinced. So.....just show up. Granted when the weather warms up, it is great out there but we can't stop now. (Thanks for your support and for that link you provided).

There are NO puppies left in there now. We must keep it that way. Sign says "CLOSED, Please call Again". I hope no one will call again.
DEMONSTRATION: This Sat. at Breeder's Assoc. of America, next to Target in Brick at 12 noon. While at Breeder's we will be addressing the subject of Puppies Galore too. We haven't researced Puppies Galore in terms of where the right-of-way is, etc. so we would rather know where we can stand first. Breeder's Association of America is equally as disgusting. GOOGLE: Kathy Bauck, Puppies on Wheels. You will find lots of information on this breeder. This was one of Breeder's Association's suppliers. The others are large horrible brokers: Hunte Corp., Lambriar, Inc. Kathy Bauck was shut down for cruelty and other things. Watch the undercover video on animalfolksmn.org or any other website showing it. You will then understand that this pet store buys only puppy mill puppies. They too must stop selling puppies. Let them sell leashes.

I thought this article was about the puppy store and not about bashing the shelters that have stepped in to help out. Maybe I am wrong?
@tweetiexx not for nothing but you should probably just stop talking. As far as I see it, anyone who doesn't volunteer or work for a shelter doesn't understand the world of animals as well as they should. Do you know how many animals have been helped by the shelter?
Instead of bashing the shelter maybe you should be happy that at least the puppies are in a place where they can recieve medical care, grooming and good food rather than a puppy store that will jack up the price that they are worth, not social the dogs, and could care less if the dog is the right dog for your family.
Do you know how many puppies are surrendered to a shelter because: "oh I didn't think he'd get so big" and "oh she is too crazy of a dog."
This article is about shutting down this puppy mill so start addressing the real matter at hand.

I used to donate to Jersey Shore Animal Shelter and arrange a holiday donation from people where I work until the story about them not wanting a cat rescue group to take a cat that had leukemia. Jersey Shore wanted the cat put down, but the rescue group fought and finally won after a long battle. After that, I wouldn't give Jersey Shore the time of day.

Also for all those people who said that they have stopped donating to the shelter because they didn't give you a dog : real mature. Seriously, you're not really hurting the people there you are only hurting the animals. The animals are the ones who need DOG food and CAT food, not the people. It's the animals that need the blankets and sheets.
So yeah, good job.

I believe Shelters see all those people who insist they want a dog or cat, professing they will take care of the animals, only to see those animals come back to the shelter for various reasons. Just because someone says I'm going to love and take care of the animal that I want to adopt, doesn't make it true. I do believe Jersey Shore is a little more stringent than most but I don't think bashing them on here is solving anything.

As for Rescue Organizations making a profit. I'm not involved with any group of any kind but how do you know they are making a profit? They don't get veterinary care for the animals they rescue for free. If they are to continue rescuing animals they need to fund it. Some organizations charge fairly substantial fees to ensure that prospective adopters can afford or will understand that owning a pet is a serious committment.

I posted a link further up in this thread to an article about why some shelter workers seem abrasive to would-be pet-owners. It makes sense and presents both sides of the issue fairly I think.
I also relayed my own experience with Jersey Shore when I was basically told I would not qualify to adopt. I wasn't happy about it primarily because I knew they were wrong and I felt like they made a decision in my case that would have a negative impact on their own mission. But regardless, I am still a happy pet-owner (2 dogs) and got my pets from elsewhere.
In any event, it doesn't change what's important here - that these sort of pet stores and the mechanism behind them need to be eradicated. I hope everyone that has expressed their outrage over this will find the time to support the demonstration tomorrow.

Thank you Laura - well spoken and true. No reputable rescue makes a profit. EVER.
There are pull fees from shelters, transport fees if coming from out of Jersey; veterinarian fees for basic examinations, vaccinations, and spay/neuter surgeries; dental surgeries, medications, and, if a dog has heartworm or another illness, expensive treatment. There are micro-chips, food, leashes, collars, crates, dog bones, shampoo, grooming, etc. etc. to be paid for. There is paper, ink (so that photos and flyers can be printed), there is gas money to pick up dogs to be spent. So, basically every rescue that I know is "in the hole" and the extra funding needed ALWAYS comes out of the pocket of the volunteer. I do wish people would understand this.

THANK YOU, DH. This is the kind of support we need.
For those of you that think that puppy mills will be eradicated some day through legislation - this will NEVER happen. There is a big, powerful machine out there lobbying against any and all pet-friendly legislation (the AKC, the Pet Advisory Council, etc. etc. etc.). They are always successful. The bills don't get passed or they get watered down. So, WE on the local level, have to be proactive and encourage others to NEVER buy from a pet store. If there is no demand for the puppy, the puppy farmers will have to find another cash crop to make their money on. PLEASE SUPPORT US. Consider attending the hearing too on 2/14 in Brick Twp. at 6:30 PM to show you do not want Puppies Galore to reopen. So many puppies in PA mills are depending on us.

Mr. Nee: We desperately need for this issue to be followed up. We need a story about the pet store/puppy mill connection. Our group spends each weekend trying to educate about this issue. The time is ripe to divulge the whole truth behind the business. The pet stores hide behind the fact that their breeders are USDA licensed, yet the Office of Inspector General issues a scathing report on the horrible job they are doing protecting the breeder dogs. These dogs are living in squalid conditions and all so that we can purchase a puppy from a pet store. People MUST understand that USDA licensed is not a ticket to a quality, health puppy. The only quality, healthy puppy they are going to get is thru a reputable small breeder or rescue. Do you want to write about this?

I am truly hoping that the citizens of Brick will not give up the good fight before Tuesday. This hearing has more at stake than just Puppies Galore. Should there be a good showing, there is a possibility that we won't have to ever deal with puppy sales at pet stores in our town again. If everyone would show their support for this (and I have met NO ONE who is not behind this); we can be rid of these animal abusers once and for all. I cannot imagine the public outcry if this business was allowed to reopen. NOW...let's make sure that Brick becomes completely animal-friendly - no sales of puppies in pet stores leaving puppy parents in misery at mass commercial breeding facilities. ARE WE ALL ON BOARD?

Thank you David for keeping us up to date. I was wondering, if they they do get their liscense revoked by the town, will they still be able to open in another town? I know they were in Sea GIrt on Rt 35 for a while before they opened in Brick but did not hear why they left there....if they were kicked out or left on their own. Would be so great to get rid of these two once and for all. I know they are fighting to get the dogs back and would hate to see them open again in another town.

Janice, my girlfriend speaks so highly of you and your husband David. She had the opportunity to meet you and David and Mike at the peaceful demonstration held near Target in Brick Township. I'm told that you are committed to end the abuse and mistreatment of animals. I share in your passion for such a cause. See you at the hearing on the 14th and keep up the noble work!

labover, you raise an issue of key importance. First we must ensure that their license is revoked. Then we must make certain that legislation is passed that would preclude storeowners and employees handling animals who have been convicted of an "offense" from ever being permitted access, ownership or employment with animals in any capacity. Moreover, meaningful legislation with significant increases in penalties for such acts must be passed as well. Currently our NJ State reprepresentatives in the 10th legislative district are working on a Bill.

We are trying to make a difference thru legislation. The pet store deception is unbelievable. We have spoken (at our demos.) with numerous customers who were told, prior to the purchase of a puppy, "Our store buys from top of the line breeders." When the customers ask for reassurance that the breeders are not "puppy mills" they are told "No, never." So we supplied customers with USDA records from breeders that supply this pet store. ALL had scathing violations listed on the USDA inspection reports. i.e. dogs kept in temps. under 35 degrees with urine soaked, feces laden bedding; dogs with less than 2 inches above their heads in their cages; dirty water bowls and food bowls; unlabeled medication sitting on the counters; dogs that had fresh, open wounds from altercations that were NOT treated by a vet; breeders that had no veterinarian visiting the breeding facility for at least one year; pools of urine mixed with feces lying underneath the cages where dogs were kept; dogs so matted with feces on their backsides that they could not properly relieve themselves; puppies whose legs get caught in the slatted flooring making it impossible for them to get back to their mom to nurse. This is all documented. These breeders are verified to have sold to Breeders Association by either a contract we obtained or a website (watchdog group) known as petshoppuppies who keeps track of pet stores and their breeders. Please send a message and attend the 2/14 meeting.

We got a 3 month old Golden Retriever from the store on Rt 70 this past summer.. At the time they didn't seem that bad and the puppy at the time seemed healthy.. We brought her to our vet for a check up and she was healthy nothing wrong.. Got her next round of shots and had her neutered.. Six months later ( about a month ago now) she started showing neurological problems. I brought her to our vet and they immediately sent me to Red Bank to the neuro.. Between my husband and I calling the store telling them about our puppy, they insisted we bring her to their vet in order to protect us for the "insurance" to cover the expenses.. As we waited for the appt. the puppy started getting worse. The next day we go to their vet for him to agree with Red Bank - do the spinal tap, blood work, MRI... Come to find out now its, "well it depends on what is wrong with her and if anything the insurance will only cover double the cost of your dog, BUT if you want we can just give you another dog" ... Honestly!! These people are sick!!!!! We got the puppy for my son to lift his spirits who is in remission from brain cancer now to find out the puppy who was find now we find out has Lymphoma!! $5,000 + later she has started her meds.. They are unreal to treat these poor animals like they are dirt. They need to realize they are not a pair of shoes and unlike them, once the pets go home they become a part of our family...They know everything they are doing!! All they care about is the money! SO SAD!

Angela: I am so sorry for your beautiful puppy's illness and I am so happy that your son is in remission. IMPORTANT: Did you get reimbursed from the store? Did you report this to the Div. of Consumer Affairs (973) 504-6200 and the Ocean County Board of Health (732) 341-9700? (If you have not PLEASE register your complaint immediately). They keep a register of these complaints and it directly impacts their license renewal. Their health certificate is a rip off as the NJ Puppy Lemon Law would have given you the same coverage for the dog's illness. This is ANOTHER way they scam people. Would you mind providing the breeder name and address to me from your contract? I want to look at the USDA records. Just reply to this.

Janice, tomorrow I will be out of town for awhile, but I hope to keep posted on the hearing and your efforts. I will continue to post, too. It is a nation-wide problem, but if every town kept up the good fight, well it would be a nation-wide revolution.

I am going to be so disappointed if not enough people show up at the hearing. This is a collective effort, really. It is critical that we show the town that we are very serious about becoming animal-friendly and don't want these puppy sales to continue. ALSO: is there anyone who wants Ms. DeSantis and Mr. Sladkin to get their dogs back? PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD. I don't know what else to do. janice

Janice, keep the faith! We will fight the good fight and continue to spread the word and tell everyone that we need one-half hour of their day to lend a voice to man's best friend.

But the message does not stop here. Oppression comes in many shapes and sizes. Abusers such as Ms. DeSantis and Mr. Sladkin remain unscathed while the fate of the innocent is left to their mercy. The mistreatment of animals is never acceptable!

Well said! How is it that this type of unethical practice is permitted to continue?
Many years ago, the same Mr. Nat Sladkin sold my family a very sick pet which eventually we had to put down (thousands of dollars in vet bills later)

I can only conclude that we need the establishment of a NJ CONSUMER & ANIMAL PROTECTION REGISTRY whereby consumers could easily identify a manner (with one central location) in which to lodge complaints and relevant information should be required to be printed on all sales receipts with purchase of sale.

Further we need legislation and provisions for the court, upon finding a person or operator of a store selling animals guilty of abusing an animal or otherwise violating the State animal cruelty laws to be issued an animal protection order against the person or store operator adjudged guilty of the abuse or other violation, requiring the person to refrain from interacting with any animal PERMANENTLY.

The time for the enactment and implementation of animal protection measures is long overdue. It is my hope that I do not have to read about this same operator doing more of the same.

The local board of health functions as the central location to lodge complaints against sick puppy purchases. THE PROBLEM: The consumers are NOT reporting this to the local board of health. We plan to meet with our state legislators to make them aware of this. How do we know this? People that come to our table at our protests against Breeders Association of America, Brick, NJ (the other pet store in town) tell us that "they had no idea they should report this."

People need to come together in towns across NJ. They need to ask their local officials to BAN the sale of puppies in pet stores. This, and only this, will prohibit these businesses from scamming the public, abusing consumers AND animals.

Brick residents - please come to the next council meeting 2/28/12 at 7:00 PM. The ordinance to ban pet sales in pet stores will be introduced at that meeting. WE MUST FOLLOW THROUGH WITH THIS MATTER!!!!

David and friends...you are correct. As long as people continue to shell out the dough, they are just feeding the monster...I hope I can help when I am back in April, but you may appreciate a recent blog post for now.http://www.nationaldogweekbook.wordpress.com.

I reported my dog to the board of health and was told to forget it. It had already been filed in court. So much for the BOARD OF HEALTH> This should never have gone this far. Dear old Nat has been playing this gmae for many years. And the so called Vet. Dr Schrieber who signed heaalth cert. and never saw the animals should be also charged. I spoke to him about getting a health cert. for a puppy I purchased in the early part of Jan. and Quote HE NEVER SEEN MY PUPPY Then the phone calls started calling me foul names from two different numbers. The police now have the numbers . These people are nothing but SLEEZE BAGS. And can they lie. My puppy is still being treated by my Vet. for Giarda. How many aniimals have died and been thrown in the trash because of these people? They belong in HELL. But even that is to good for them.

Thanks Nicole. I just saw their "sales" site. A fb friend/breeder commented the other day that she is leary of government interference on the issue of pet sales and just wished people would stop buying their dogs from retail stores. She does have a point, but unfortunately it isn't that simple. But, those who organize and attend the peaceful protests and hearings are educating the public and that is probably the best outcome, here, and on a national level. Keep up the good work. I share with the media and my contacts across the nation. They are watching (and hopefully will support us). Brick can set a good example and influence other regions, just like Albuquerque, NM (hope I spelled that right) and cities in California. I has been done. A very Happy Passover and Holiday Season to you all.

If you buy a dog from a pet store or even a breeder, you are killing a dog at a shelter.
