'Oddly Quiet' at the Jersey Shore, say State Police

Minor accident on GSP, two airlifted from Seaside Park

Considering it’s the official start of summer at the Jersey Shore, traffic mishaps and accidents have been minimal, according to NJ state police.

“It’s oddly quiet,” said Lieutenant David Robbins. “The three lanes on the [Garden State] Parkway have helped.”

Earlier in the week, the last of the barrels were removed from the Garden State Parkway between Toms River and Manahawkin, which signaled the long-awaited opening of a highway that is now three lanes in each direction.

A vehicle overturned this weekend in Toms River at mile marker #87 on the southbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway. Minor injuries were reported. “The vehicle was removed and traffic is flowing,” said Robbins.

In Seaside Park, two incidents early Saturday required airlifts. The first involved a fall, according to scanner reports. The second, reported at 4:17 a.m. was an apparent assault. Check back with Patch for updates.

maybe with the cost of gas, parking at the shore, beach fees, etc., it's cheaper to stay home

Couldn't tell it was quiet by the crowd at the mini mall in Brick where I get my hair cut and the new Stop & Shop. The Dunkin Donuts on Fischer had at least 15 cars in the lot this morning and that never happens.

The Jersey Shore has brought disgrace to this town ... A town that used to be for families is now known for fist pumping, drinking, fighting and trash. Florida kicked them out, Italy won't let them film there but we did what does that say about us?

Agree about the show, but it did not have a pristine image to begin with.
I think Snookie is selling Pizza in Italy. Hard to find people without a
price these days

Seaside Heights was on a downward slide long before the likes of the Jersey Shore crew. I grew up on the beaches and boardwalk in Seaside Heights. I loved it, but now, it isn't worth crossing the bridge for.

That show is disgusting. What has this generation come to??? If parents were smart they would ban TV from their homes altogether because the mainstream media has polluted their minds beyond control. They see it on TV and think .... it's okay. I wouldn't go to seaside if someone paid me to go. It seems the boardwalk has attracted the most disgusting kind of people around. They walk around with everything hanging out.... pierced bodies, tattoos, etc. etc. This generation is so pitiful and quite sad. Parents need to be parents and be involved with their childrens' lives more. Kids come home to empty houses and watch all the garbage on tv.... and have access to who knows what on the computer.

I am bewildered by the acceptance and celebration of the Jersey Shore Show . Its a sad "state" that our world has entered. Even Lady Gaga and the raunchy performance on Americian Idol, when does it stop? My heart breaks for the parents who are trying to raise children with morals and intergrity. Its a constant battle parents have to combat. Bad behavior is celebrated and encouraged in todays society. Its a shame.

Some comments above have absolutely nothing to do with the subject of it being oddly quiet at the Jersey Shore. Complaining about current events & "today's youth" is nothing new however; it's been on-going for many centuries! Check out some of these interesting gripes and take note as to who they are from and when they were said:

"I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on
frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond
words... When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and
respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly wise
disrespectful and impatient of restraint" (Hesiod, 8th century BC).

"The world is passing through troubled times. The young people of
today think of nothing but themselves. They have no reverence for
parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint. They talk as
if they knew everything, and what passes for wisdom with us is
foolishness with them. As for the girls, they are forward, immodest
and unladylike in speech, behavior and dress." (Peter the Hermit
in A.D. 1274~ 700+ years ago!)

The Greek philosopher Plato complained about the youth of his era in time too: "What is happening to our young people? They disrespect their elders, they disobey their parents. They ignore the law. They riot in the streets inflamed with wild notions. Their morals are decaying. What is to become of them?"

Obviously, we have survived through the ages, and I'm quite confident that we will continue to do so for centuries to come. In the meantime, perhaps instead of bitching about the "youth of today", we ought to instead concentrate on being thankful to both the "youth of today," and to the "youth of the past," for serving in our armed forces. Moreover, we should be especially thankful to all those young & old alike that sacrificed their lives for America just so that you & I can be free to enjoy our beaches & barbecues with our families and loved ones during this beautiful Memorial Day weekend. May God Bless all that reads this & may you & yours be well!~ Gino

I am amazed that people woud pay to use the beach ... or worse yet pay to park..especially in Asbury Park...they should pay you to be there.....no really I am sure, and it could be tested, that if there were no parking and no beach fees the amount of local business sales tax revenue would exceed the limited people paying at the beach or the people who after paying have nothing left to spend in the local economies or refuse to spend cause they think their pockets have been picked enough.

Your beaches are beautiful - so thankful to be here and see the Atlantic Ocean and walk on your boardwalk. You are blessed to have this in your backyard. Praise God from whom this great blessing has come.

No one wants to be here! Especially when they can get better beaches, FREE I might add in Wildwood, Cape May and lots to explore! Why pay?

Thankyou Rebecca. So nice to hear a positive remark. I agree with you totally. We are lucky to have these beaches in our back yard.

Yes, most beaches here in Monmouth & Ocean counties are nice; however, I have also lived in California (San Diego, Redondo Beach, and Santa Cruz) and the beaches out there are quite nice too~ plus~ even better: they are free! It's interesting too, that regardless of the fact that you can legally drink alcoholic beverages, fish, smoke, and barbecue there if you so choose to do so; beaches there for the most part are free of litter & cigarette butts.

I've lived in California too and while it's true that the state does have some great beaches (Santa Monica and Manhattan Beach were a couple of personal favorites), it's interesting how people conveniently leave out the California beaches that have serious issues. Go take a trip to Venice Beach littered with its crazies and crime - nothing beats those Kevlar vest tanlines. My point being that all states have problem areas. Just as we shouldn't judge California by Venice Beach, people shouldn't base their perceptions of NJ on Seaside.

I totally agree with you billabong; people shouldn't judge all of New Jersey's beaches based on a visit to just one of them. A good example is Island Beach State Park: it's beautiful, clean and it's always a nice experience for me when I go there. As for Venice Beach in California, well yes~ it is quite strange to say the least!

dont get me wrong, i am not a fan of MTV comimg to Seaside Heights, but come on people, if you lived down here forever like me, you would know that Seaside Heights has been a dump forever(way before snooki was even born). What do you expect when a town has a bar on every corner? Its not a place for a family vacation. I dont know why anyone would choose to stay there. I hope beautiful towns like South Seaside Park arent being confused with The Heights. Pieceful famlily beaches! More costly to stay though, but you get what you pay for! As far as paying to get on the beach, never agian for me. Get a boat go to tices shoal, and walk across to IBSP. Its the best. And I must say for hundreds of boats parking over there every weekend, no trash in the water or on the beach. Amazing!

I agree, SSH has been a dump for years. The problem now is gang violence and assaults with weapons.
