It's Official: Trick Or Treat Night In Berkeley Is October 30
Township Council votes on date; Councilwoman Judy Noonan casts lone no vote
Make sure you have plenty of Snickers, Hershey bars and M&Ms on hand by Oct. 30, so you'll be ready for trick or treaters in your neighborhood.
The Township Council recently voted to pick the day before Halloween as official Trick or Treat Night in Berkeley in 2012. That gives residents a chance to attend the annual Toms River Halloween Parade on Oct. 31.
Oct. 30 was the unofficial Trick or Treat night in Berkeley for many years. But the date was changed to Halloween at least once in recent years, leading to some confusion.
Not everyone was happy with the choice at the Sept. 25 council meeting. Councilwoman Judy Noonan still opted for Oct. 31.
"I think Halloween should be on the 31st," Noonan said. "I'm going to say no."
What do you think? Would you rather have Trick or Treat night on Oct. 30 or Oct. 31?
Tell us why in the comments below and take our unofficial poll!

The parade should be moved to a Saturday night before Halloween! Can we change Christmas? or Valentine's Day? Mother's Day?.....What are we teaching to people by this "convenience philosophy?"

Moved to Bayville in 1979, never understood why we had to follow what Toms River does, they should have the parade the Saturday before Halloween. Politics screws up everything in the county!

T-or-T the day before is stupid. It should be on the 31st, in every town, including TR. If you want to attend the parade, attend the parade.

Totally agree, parade should be on the weekend too much during the week. For parents with kids in the parade and like to trick or treat having both on the same day would just be wrong.Saturday parade seems like a resonable solution however don't see it happening.

Don't see the problem here. I never understood why parades would take place on any day other than the day the parade is in celebration of. Having trick or treat on the eve of Halloween is no different than people celebrating Christmas on Christmas Eve.

parade should be on the weekend. It is a very late night for families and difficult getting the little ones up the next day for school or day care.
Otherwise, the 30th is good so people can attend it. Kids shouldn't suffer because one of their siblings is in the parade and the family will want to see that.
Lets keep it FUN for the kids. They put so much time in to their costumes.

In a way, it's much more profitable for the kids. Now they can go to other townships the next night to get candy on the 31. Obviously it doesn't really matter, because every year there are less children doing Holloween. Most parents are afraid in todays world. So they keep their chidren home, or go to Holloween parties.

Kids need to be kids. If they enjoy the party, great. It's a nice option to feel safe. I haven't seen evidence of less trick or treaters in Beachwood or TR though. Still going strong there!

The March of Time.......
I grew up in North Jersey, in the childhood I grew in, there was still Mischief Night on the 30th of October, Holloween Parades were held in grammer schools during the day, which grandma's and grandpa's went to see, and costumes were home made for the most part. Neighbors would make up small bags of treats, is was a different time for all. Here in Ocean County the PARADE in Toms River is televised and is advertised as the largest parade in the State. Pehaps having the date set on the 30th has more to do with how communities evolve how, priorties change for families, and how we celebrate together as families, friends and neighbors in our communities. What does matter is how we act as a community, creating memories for our children and grandchildren, and sharing the good spirit of Holloween , rather than the day it falls on.

Since I can remember Berkeley always had T or T on the 30th and when we were kids, we went to Berkeley one nite and lacey the next. Now being a mother, I would love to see it on the day its supposed to be the 31st. Anthony has a good point, we don't change other holidays! The parade should be on the weekend so all can enjoy!! I love parades but cant do everything!

I wonder if the school parades will still be held on the 31st, or if they will move them. Seems silly to T-or-T Tuesday night and wear the costume in school for a parade the next day.

Good point. I hope they have the school parades on the 30th. It will put the kids in a festive mood for trick or treating when they get home.

I have been saying for years that the parade should always be on the Saturday before Halloween. I don't know of any place else that doesn't trick or treat on Halloween. Who made up this "rule".

Trick or treating should be on Halloween, changing the date every year should be a non issue. I dont understand why the date of the parade doesnt work around the holiday. Why do we move trick or treating every year causing confusion as to what day is it that year...all this based on a parade that not everyone goes to. I grew up in Monmouth county and this was never an issue, trick or treating was on the holiday. The suggestion about the Sat before is a good one too because at least every year there would be no question as to what date trick or treating is and we wouldnt have to wait for the town council to decide.

The TR Halloween parade is the only Halloween parade in the country and it is a historic tradition.. I even saw it on the Travel Channel. It's a lot of fun and I've marched in it many times with various groups. growing up in Bayville my whole life, I trick or treated the night before. I'm so ashamed I actually took 2 minutes out of my day to respond to this. People need get a grip. Stop whining.

Personally I think that Trick or Treat should be held on the weekend. Especially for all of us who work full time and have little kids. By the time my husband and I get out of work, get the kids home, get them dressed and head out with our 4 and 3 year old it will be dark!

I agree! Why not hold it one a weekend that way the kids don't have to worry about the time considering that doing it on a weekday they have school the next day so going out doing the trick or treating then getting them un-hyped an ready for bed an then for school makes no sense whats so ever!
