So those that don't like him have no right to comment and those that do like him can comment away? How about you keep your comment to yourself and allow those of us that have damaged homes and no relief in sight to voice our frustrations. Millions upon millions raised and not one red penny for a single person affected by the hurricane. We have a right to be upset! How about you check out www.thehollandfamilyfund.com and see just one family that deserves the Governor's attention. Home Depot does not need his help!

Suz thought I was asking a legitimate question. Stores usually take years of planning so this store was probably in the works prior to Sandy. Did Christie have anything to do with this store becoming a reality or is he just taking credit for something he had no part in?

No one has to keep their comments to themselves about anything. Christie has done nothing at all since the storm, but go around campaigning. He has most people fooled by his actions and loud mouth. Robert Bressman is right about his wife sitting on $32 million in donations. Why hasn't any of it been distributed? Christie is more worried about the "tourist" trade than the people that have lost everything. Wake up people and realize what this man really is!

why not use the 32 million by going up and down the local streets of Ortley and give the people the difference between what insurance gave them and what the builders want to repair the homes? This way everyone can come back home. Gone will be the problem of losing tax money. Use the money by hiring a company or a few to lift the homes to the new code so people can come back home! not such a hard problem on how to spend the money when you really want to help the local people. Giving free hats to open up Home Depot seems foolish when you have no home to hang your hat in.

People should return to Lavalette Hardware and Seaside Lumber because they have been serving our communities during the absolute worst of this. And they better understand our needs.

How many homes that are still sitting in the River or washed away in the Ocean on one sitting on top of another are starting the foreclosure process already ??/
@ Candy, our family as many...lost personal property & a vehicle,
My husband & I both have worked since we where 15 paying taxes & now 48 & 52 still working ( that support FEMA) we where denied our claim for about $4,000.... tell me the taxes we have paid have not covered what we lost? Sure nothing compared to many, but still have losses, Our homeowners insurance Iam waiting to see how high that's going up & living about 2 blocks from the river just waiting to hear that I'am going to need flood insurance... If that is the case we will HAVE to sell our home. As I'am sure other people will be following along... Something Needs to be done QUICK or the year round residents will be demolished & the year round revenue will be depleted ...

Diligently and frequently searching the internet I could only find about 15 home raising contractors doing business in New Jersey. Since my home was on the mainland coast of Barnegat in a non-marquee area I cant even get one person from one of those companies to even come give me an estimate.

The few house raiser contractor there are appear to have divided up areas of operations and if you are not dead center of their agreed to area they are not even going to put you on a waiting list.

I have called the state and have asked them for a list of licensed home raisers. The state told me that they can’t do that because there is no specialized license for home rising. They do not know how many house raising specialist there are currently in State.

The person I talked to at the state just kept not believing me when I told them there were only a handful of house raises in NJ. I think they may be keeping this quiet to prevent the politicians from getting a black eye by agreeing to the new flood zones before realizing that New Jersey just does not have the assets available in the private sector to raise all the houses even within a 10 year time.

This might be bigger than an oversight I think this information may perhaps be purposefully being quashed and downplayed because of how damaging politically it may be.

Owen,
I think it is a disgrace that there is no "specialized license" for house raising! Any joe blow can just pick up a house, risk dropping it on someone or something if they don't know what they are doing and "oops, sorry?" I am a contractor and need a license and insurance for just about everything we do. Do these guys even have to have minimal insurance? Make sure whomever you hire has a history of referrals, a valid insurance policy and a real address where you can find them if you have a problem. I see "new" house raisers popping up all over the place....consumer beware. I know Ducky Johnson from Louisiana is around and Wolfe house raisers are both reputable....have not heard of anyone else that is legit.

In a discussion with the Hazard Mitigation representatives at the Disaster Assistance Center on Fischer Blvd., I was told that there are 12 to 15 "qualified" house raisers in New Jersey. Given that tidbit, I asked how all these homes could possibly be lifted in four years (to qualify for Haz Mit or ICC), he conceded that it was unlikely that it could be done, though there is always the possibility of yet another extension. Thus, I took yet another manual (which are great for starting fires as I have no heat on my first floor ) and headed on down the road.

Wonder if North Carolina and Florida and maybe Louisiana don't license home raisers? The problem here is not very many of these contractors really know what this game is about and this State which always declared we would never have a storm like this, has again let us down. Licensing would take some State employees and attorneys to do the work to put that sort of program together.

We the people just do not count in this picture and have to learn to deal with it. And it might be time for us to vote more intelligently from now on.

That I think is part of the overall plan. To upgrade the residents to one percenters in their new, high and mighty houses requires that we in the middle class must evacuate. This seems to be the prevailing thought in NJ politicians' heads and there are more Catch 22 to our staying here than Yosarian ever dreamed of.

If the Gov really wants tp rebuild the Barrier Island then force those 79 beach front property owners to sign the easements. So the USACE dunes can be built and we all can rebuild our homes to reasonable building standards. Call and tell the Gov no votes for him in Nov unless the USACE dunes are constructed.

Those selfish HOA's and elistists are not going without a fight. Mark my words. TR and the state already threatened they better have the easements signed by 4/1 and 5/1. Let's hope that's not an emplty threat and they force all those selfish morons into doing what good for all of us and not just them.

That's just to obvious and easy apparently for our Governor to see. He seems to have a vision of a gold coast a la Maibu but the problem is there are fewer and fewer of those folks around and right now the democrats are busy in Congress trying to get the interest on second home mortgages eliminated as a tax deduction.

But don't try to wake the snoozing Governor.

My only comment about Home Depot is that I know for a fact, that they organized and sent teams of employees (and paid them) to conduct clean up efforts on the barrier island that you all seem to be referring to.

You can say whatever you want about Home Depot in FR but, they cleaned out and gutted homes in Glen Cove. They helped 3 of our neighbors.

If the dunes are built and factored in as obstructions to wave propagation in the model being used to develop the preliminary maps, they will contribute to adjustments in zones and elevations.. Further, each and every municipality that is going to be affected by new FIRM maps should have their engineers/flood plain managers working on having the very best experts available identifying bulkheads, buildings, vegetation , etc that would serve as obstructions to wave propagation. This will be the only opportunity to do so, so it is of critical importance to ease the crippling effect on the ever diminishing tax base and economy overall. Write, call, or email your local officials and demand that this issue is vigorously addressed.

I don't mean to sound disrespectful or insensative; but I am tired of hearing about Seaside and their boardwalk rebuilding. What about Brick, Bayville and TR? There's money to rebuild the barrier island but where are the funds to put residents back into their homes ? I know the island brings revunue to the state but does anyone really think they are going to make a killing this summer? Do you really think people will vacation at the JS this year ? You will only see the day trippers. And what will they purchase for the day ? Lunch/dinner maybe. I think Seaside is in for a rude awakening. Hope I'm wrong.

And most of my displaced neighbors won't for the most part be spending time this summer in Ocean County. The new maps will not take into account the dunes that are going to be built and until that happens, people who came through actually with dry houses won't return because they are being told that nothing less than 14' is high enough for Fema. Nuts. But a way to get the middle class out.

For all of you who had something to say about my comment...first of all, I also am suffering from Sandy thru my family members. Yes, it is very frustrating and I do understand. I apologize to those of you who think I meant to "keep your comments to yourselves"...I did't realize that it came across wrong and as argumentative. I just feel that Christie is trying to help and I do respect his ability to try to do so.

The Home Depot is just a design center, they have no stock. We can all continue to pay high prices for quick material or take the long drive to depot, lowes, allied, whichever you choose. I drove by lavallette hardware on the way out, they have 4 large containers on site, I'm pretty sure they are doing just fine...

My community has not signed the easement, and I don't believe we will.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... If you live near an airport you're going to hear airplanes. Translated - if you live blocks from the ocean or the bay you're gonna get wet... at some point in time. Sandy was your time !! Somebody who lives in Morristown could care less about the storm damage to Ortley or Seaside or any other town along the Shore....but their Home Owner Ins rates will go up too... why? because virtually every Insurance company will pay Sandy damage...obviously not all that they should pay... JUST SAYIN!!!!

People in Morristown DO care about storm damage to Shore towns, because a lot of them own homes there, or have friends or relatives who do, or have rented or visited there for years - or decades. In some way, virtually everyone in NJ is from the Shore.

Since FEMA picks up flood losses, not private insurers, no one's homeowers' insurance will be increasing due to Sandy shore damage or even from Sandy at all, except to the extent someone somewhere got a wind damage claim paid. Stop laughing. It COULD happen...

Because we live near the sea we pay thousands of dollars in flood insurance - just like people pay thouands of dollars for auto insurance. When someone gets in an accident, no one tells them that they should have known better than to be on the road. We've been hearing the equivalent of that form months. It gets old.

I could see it if flood insurance was highly subsidized, but, in fact, 80% of home owners already pay "actuarial" rates that are sufficient to cover their anticipated losses, which is why we're so angry about absurd new maps that use "global warming" as a pretext for 500% premium increases to pay off Katrina debt. If there is any preaching it should be at "free riders" who don't insure and depend on disaster funds, although with the new premiums some of us may not have a choice.

I would think that fighting back against another example of Jersey paying more than it gets back would be something that everyone in the State could support.

I just heard this morning that the Home Depot in Seaside is a bit different than one might think. Its more like an office that helps planning and takes orders. I admit I havent been there or seen it. If thats the case , then maybe there wont be a huge impact on the local stores. It would be a shame . These local guys are part of the landscape and deserve our support.

foggyworld why would you boycott Home Depot? Did you step in any of the stores after the storm? They stayed open 24 hours for like a week straight (with no heat) so they could provide incoming supplies (generators, batteries, water, kerosene, etc...). Do you think that Seaside Lumber would be able to do that? I heard the Brick store donated around 12 generators to the town of Brick. There was a PAL banquet and Home Depot was one of the few non-food establishments that was honored in the Brick area. People that work there have families too, to boycott them is just plain silly. Did you read the article?

That's the way they are running everything pertaining to this storm. Berkeley Township was busy giving out free permits for people to repair or rebuild to the in-place codes. They knew from the get go that these changes were coming but did not a thing to stop homeowners from thinking it was wise to go ahead.

And then the rolly poly Governor was yucking it up before the new stuff came out and telling all of us to get going with the rebuilding. Can we sue him?

Don't feel bad Ortley Joe. I'm living in my primary and only residence and instead of the click, I get form letters! FEMA was known to every Governor involved except ours to be the most inefficient agency that this bloated federal government has. We were tossed to the winds. The Governor doesn't feel he needs even our votes apparently. Time will tell.

This has nothing to do with the article but here goes. After months of battle with the ins. co., which almost put me in the psycho ward, we finally rec'd. our settlement check. I almost fainted when I saw the amount. It was $5,000 less than what we wanted. The impact of sandy and the aftermath will be with us forever; but we can move on with ourlives, or try. We are not rebuilding as I can't go thru this again. Ever !

I was on the "demo, cut my losses and move on" bandwagon for awhile but something just really bothered me about that. Despite all the politics and BS the jersey shore and it's people have given me and my family more good memories than this one bad long one. It might be dumb but I am going to do everything I can to be part of the Renaissance of the jersey shore, My kids and grandkids deserve it. It will be a long time and work but I know there will be a sweet reward reward when the dust settles. I guess I'm putting my Jersey Strong bumper sticker where my mouth is...

Home Depot & Lowe's will donate to his campaign(s) as thanks for the free advertising. Meanwhile, the masses suffer. The gov. blindly acquiesced to FEMA's erroneous maps, over-reaching elevation mandates and exorbitant annual premiums, and we suffer. Tens of thousands who can't afford them will abandon homes or go into foreclosure -- but the gov. expects our votes to put him in free housing at 1600 Pennsy. Ave. It won't happen, just like his "Jersey comeback."
