The Central Regional girls soccer team will be playing for a sectional title next week, after the Golden Eagles notched a 2-1 victory over Kingsway Regional in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group III semifinal in Bayville on Friday.
Amanda Carolan scored twice in the second half to lift Central (15-2-1) into the SJIII final, where the Golden Eagles will face fourth-seeded Moorestown (15-4-1), which knocked off top-seeded Hammonton 2-1 on Wednesday.
Central pressured the Kingsway defense throughout the first half, but could not get a shot to find the back of the net.
The game remained scoreless until midway into the second half, when the Kingsway goalkeeper received a red card and was ejected for fouling Central's Brittni Calleo. The Dragons were forced to play a player short for the remainder of the game and their backup keeper went in goal.
A minute later, Carolan got free near the top of the 18 and received a pass from Brooke Myers. Carolan then tapped the ball past the goalkeeper and touched it into the corner for Central's first goal.
Kingsway (13-5-1), the third seed, tied the score about 10 minutes later when a scramble ensued off in front of the Central goal off a direct kick. Keeper Lindsey Mahnken punched away the initial kick, but the ball was controlled by a Kingsway player, who took a shot that was blocked by a Central defender before Kingsway was able to knock the ball in.
Carolan scored the game-winner with less than 5 minutes remaining, taking a pass up the left wing and drilling a shot from outside the left post into the right corner of the net.
