While children in many parts of the state will be enjoying a delayed Halloween on Monday, Berkeley's children will be waiting until Friday to get their treats.

Concerns about downed wires, debris and other issues convinced township officials to find a safer option than having children going house to house this year. Instead, they will be able to go door to door -- at Berkeley Township Elementary School.

Berkeley Superintendent James D. Roselli said the school will be open from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday for the township's children to go from room to room, knocking on teachers' doors and getting candy.

Anyone wishing to donate candy for the event can drop off unopened bags at the elementary school, 10 Emory Boulevard -- just off Station Road -- between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The school also will be open as a warming center and a site to charge your cell phones and other devices at those times.

The trick-or-treating has been broken down to a suggested schedule by school, Roselli said, with Clara B. Worth students scheduled for 11 a.m., H&M Potter at noon, Bayville School at 1 p.m., BTES and Ocean Gate students at 2 and Central Regional students at 3 p.m.

Trick-or-treating will continue until 7 p.m. to accommodate those families with working parents, Roselli said. Siblings and other children within the community are welcome, he said.
