Benefit for Bayville Mom of Five Slated for Saturday

Cindy Gilman was severely injured on March 23 after she was struck by a drunk driver

Cindy Gilman, 48,  has always forged ahead, no matter what challenges are  thrown at her.

The single mother has worked three jobs for years to support her five children.

She was working one of those jobs -- delivering the Asbury Park Press -- in the early morning hours of March 23 when she was struck by a drunk driver on Route 9 near Cox Cro Road,  said her cousin, Lacee Applegate.

The longtime Bayville resident's injuries were horrific.

Her right leg was shattered and is now cobbled together with titanium rods. Her left leg was broken from the knee down. Her right arm was broken from the elbow down. Gilman has had four surgeries so far.

And the extent of her injuries has taken its toll on her, Applegate said.

"It's very hard for her," she said. "Cindy is the most positive person you will ever meet. She really feels like she had her wings clipped. She feels like her life has been changed forever. "

As if things weren't complicated enough, Gilman will have to leave the Health South rehabilitation facility she is currently in on Wednesday, when her New Jersey Care medical coverage runs out. Gilman made a little too much -- roughly $100 over the poverty line -- to qualify for Medicaid, Applegate said.

Applegate, her family and friends are teaming up to hold a benefit spaghetti dinner for Gilman and her children from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday at the V.F.W. Post 9503, to help with expenses.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. The menu includes spaghetti and meatballs, rolls, salads and a choice of beverages and desserts. Beer and wine will also be available. Entertainment will be provided by DJ Fast Phil of Masterpiece DJs. All who attend are urged to make a donation for a chance to win prizes from local businesses.

The V.F.W. Post holds roughly 200 people. Ticket reservations are recommended and can be done by e-mailing gilmanfund@gmail.com. Tickets may also be available at the door. All proceeds will go directly to the family, Applegate said.

Gilman will recuperate at her  mother's house in Toms River when she has to leave Health South next week. But the family is concerned that she will not receive the proper rehabilitation for her injuries or occupational therapy in a home setting, Applegate said.

Gilman is right-handed and will have to learn how to use her left hand. The family is hoping she will eventually be able to walk again, but she faces a long recovery, Applegate said.

Her children -- three boys and two girls -- range in age from 24 to 14. They are coping as best as they can with their mother's situation. The oldest is a dive welder who works in Louisiana and sends money home to help.  Two other children, ages 21 and 20, also work. The younger children,  ages 17 and 14, are still in school. The youngest is now living with a relative, Applegate said.
